I don't know if my car can do voice commands, but it does have the giant-ass-screen. Where I live we sometimes get this stuff called "rain" or "fog" or "clouds" which all mean you should turn on the headlights. Which is now several accurate taps required while driving down the fucking road as the auto-lights don't come on nearly soon enough. I've been searching but no one has just implemented a fucking knob you can hook to the CANBUS that I can find. At least the climate controls are mostly physical except for a couple like changing the vent settings.
The amazing thing about touch screen is that condensation can fuck up touch. They also SIMPLY GO BAD in like 3-5 years. Sure a button sticking and being unresponsive is bad, but imagine your entire car.

I hate Microsoft Update. Every update:
* Breaks something/impkements some shitty feature
* It resets my default apps with shitty Windows alternatives
* It re-adds MsOffice to start menu, removes Libra/other apps from start menu, etc etc
100% jeeted

The safeguard for aftermarket head units, for the last 20 years, has been the handbrake must be engaged. But you just ground that wire so its always "engaged"
That hasn't worked for some time, now you need a slightly more elegant solution, like a switch you can toggle, or an inexpensive, premade little doodad you wire into the harness.

Thats probably the case, I think there's also variation in different markets. I put a couple of double din ones in, In the last 5 years and that was all they needed. Nothing I have has proper built in infotainment screens, but I have also seen the original screen jambed up under the dash still connected to prevent ALL the warning lights, computer says no issues coming up

I have a pile of 2005 tech for my early 2000s project car, it has back of headrest screens to go in, but I passed on the single din head unit with fold out screen for maximum living in the future points

Well guess what? "Child Safety" is coming to you in your Operating System in the coming year.
OF COURSE it's the governor of California. The same guy who managed those fires so well, and may be complacent in fraud that dwarfs that of Minnesota...

Are there any resistances out there to that "subscription" bullshit, at least aside from free software?

Or is every commercial software and operating system gonna go that "subscription model" bullshit route?

I'm not sure about big names, but I bought wonderdraft a few years back, it's a map-making software. You buy it once, get updates for as long as the creator releases them, and you can just download an exe and run it however you want, no DRM or similar (even though it is not open source). Aseprite also comes to mind with it's source-available model, where you buy the built version from the lead developer. I'll admit that even though I bought it, most of the times I've installed it was through the AUR, which builds it for you automatically, instead of downloading the "official" build.

I'd wish they'd start putting CD players in cars again. For Christ's sake some newer ones don't even give you an aux jack anymore. I find modern car touchscreens extremely distracting. So yeah, more new cars should have buttons for shit like radio and climate controls, too.

I tried to sign in one of my google accounts, typed password, hit enter and got greeted with this. I had signed into it minutes earlier without vpn on my phone (I had vpn on on this device). They are just straight up blocking me now. What's next, only be able to access via 1 device using 1 ip address?
Also about the account I got locked out of in my last post: I managed to get into it again just by logging in again after waiting like a few months. "For your protection" my ass

Yea I get that whenever I get a new device/travel.

Bonus tried traveling via airline company. Their app just links to the website. But you need the app? But when you check in it opens a browser.

And it's not just Lynk & Co that added voiceover commands to turn off the headlights, as other automakers have the same:

Also, some of those cars don't even have a physical headlight switch, in the usual Chinese cost-cut fashion.

A similar thing happens when trying to log into a Google account when using qutebrowser. Jewgle says that the browser is "not secure" and so you can't sign in. This can be somewhat easily bypassed by changing the web headers using
Code:
:set -u https://accounts.google.com/* content.headers.user_agent "Mozilla/5.0 ({os_info}; rv:130.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/130"
This apparently makes the browser secure enough to use.

Niggers think Chinese EVs will be the salvation of the car industry. I worked on Honda Prologues brand new off the lot (being shitty rebadges of GM cars that are actually made in Mexico on behalf of GM's Chinese partner, SAIC), they are just as shit as everything else. China getting rid of those electric door handles is based and overdue, but the cars themselves are still shit. Only way to make them less shit is to make them more basic. Consoomgroids need to learn to live with less convenience.

The #1 thing that's gonna make your car cost a small fortune down the road (other than skipping routine maintenance, ALWAYS use the severe service intervals as your starting point. Always change fluids and filters BEFORE you need to. And if they say a fluid lasts the life of the car, they're lying. Change that shit. Some advice from a former mechanic) is all the fancy shit they jingle in front of people on the showroom floor. The big screens, the panoramic sunroofs, the self driving shit (which makes most people retarded behind the wheel. Look at the average Tesla driver if you don't believe me. Those retards have 0 spatial awareness), etc. There is basically no aftermarket for most of that shit, meaning you will have to pay out the ass for replacements. Even used parts, assuming they're even good, will be expensive.

TL;DR Keep and fix your old car. It will be less shit than whatever new slop is out there.

I genuinely miss dial-up. Logging onto AOL and hearing the handshake and then "You've got mail!" was a dopamine fix. I miss the simpler days of the internet.

Not sure if this is grinding my gears or a tech trend.

Sounds like they have implemented some kind of "atypical travel" policy that is maybe combined with being suspicious towards certain IPs(VPNs...). I don't think that's unreasonable, for certain stuff, but the reason they're doing it is that they're trying to rope in as much sensitive material/services as possible into what used to be a free fucking e-mail account.

Same with some other services. I had to download a fucking phone app or some shit to access my Steam account just because some retards are sitting on virtual knife skins worth tens of thousands.

I just eat into the microphone when not speaking during online meetings. This way I can make everyone else hate online meetings as much as I do and do my part in tilting the pendulum towards fewer online meetings.

My computers are cheap thinkpads I bought for $100 so I just say my camera is busted. And because everyone knows I'm a cheapskate, nobody questions it.
