So it appears a major diplomatic crisis is brewing in the world's arsehole as Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, the UAE and Yemen have ceased all air, sea and land trade with Qatar, with accusations that they are destabilising the region by funding terrorism.

The Qatari stock exchange is already down 6.5% and all flights have been forced to divert over Iranian airspace.

Official statement from the Qatari government.

Get your popcorn ready dudes, as this is just another chapter in the Iran-Saudi Arabia Cold War.

This is a pretty bad development, as they are one of our key allies in the region. Also, unlike other dumber oil countries, they're actively working toward a post-petroleum economy. That may have more to do with this than some vague nonsense about "terrorism."

Nothing else to add other than I hope things don't get too out of control.

That and Al-Jazeera and the Emir have apparently been smack talking the House of Saud recently

That probably has more to do with it than this other fabricated sounding bullshit.

Ironically (or not), this is likely to further deepen the ties between the Saudis and the Israelis.

Also Qatar is pretty fucked by this:

Imports-by-region.jpg

It gets half its food imports from other Middle Eastern countries, the bulk of which pass through the land border with Saudi Arabia. Which is now closed.

Also Etihad and Emirates have cancelled all their flights to (and presumably through) Doha. Gulf Air and Egyptair are expected to follow. As if the Syrian and Ukrainian conflicts didn't make flying from Asia to the US bloody difficult enough.

EDIT: Also, the GCC-backed Yemeni proxy government accuses Qatar of working with the Houthis.

EDIT EDIT: I'm sure the timing of this has nothing at all to do with the CIA creating a new unit to pursue 'covert action' in Iran.

They just decided to ramp up production of natural gas, and I wonder how this is going to affect that.

I hope the Saudis aren't on the phone for too long hammering this censure out.

They have a call from a Mr. Kettle on line 2...

19 hijackers in one instance alone and the Saudis have the gall to bitch about anyone else.

The Saudis have no right to complain about others supporting terrorism ever.

Here are two Fdd senior employees talking about how, actually, it's great that the Saudis import so many weapons because they can 'defend democracy' in the region.
Looks like they've been pushing 'economic regime change' in Iran for at least five years now.
