Option 1: they really were invested in this Christian stuff back then and Kayla was doing a good faith effort to be a good Christian wife.
Option 2: it was always a cynical ploy to grab more assets from the trust, which is set up to let the kids who have more kids inherit more assets, high-partition style so the most fecund of your kids/spouse pairs get more stuff. Trusts are highly customizable and can stipulate all sorts of conditions to pay out.

Trusts can be set up to pay out if you have educational expenses / are in secondary education or even just require the beneficiary to hit a certain age. Other conditions are possible like I conjectured above. Without knowing the specific conditions of the trust(s) Nick is beneficiary of it’s all gonna be speculative.

I do enjoy the juxtaposition of Rekieta's imagined world of Kurt Muller being this unlovable, creepy incel asshole when in reality, he's staying fucking overnight at a hospital, comforting a gravely ill friend a day after co-hosting a stream raising charity for kids.
