From some long ago lecture I watched it was explained that roman ness was something that people started being able to set in and out of depending on what they needed.
In Alric's case he fought in the roman army and basically the administration stiffed him.
Let's be fair here, the Romans brought the 410 sack on themselves. The Senate had just killed their best general & basically prime minister,
Stilicho (who was himself a half-barb - Vandal father, provincial Roman mother -
and had already buckbroken Alaric &
a bunch of other Goths before) as well as his entire family, in a coup engineered by the turbonigger
Olympius, who I would liken to a Roman version of those retarded groypers today who voted for Harris, hate Stephen Miller & will vote for Newsom in 2028 because Vance has a jeeta wife while Newsom's wife (and Harvey Weinstein's former cum dumpster) is white (except Olympius at least actually got shit done IRL, even if it was all bad).
The Romans then killed the families of all their Gothic auxiliaries in a huge pogrom but missed said auxiliaries, who then obviously joined Alaric's army by the thousand and also gave him a nice sob story with which to mobilize even more of his people.
Emperor Honorius was one of the most useless niggers to wear the purple in late Roman history, which is in itself an impressive feat, and while that was manageable as long as Stilicho was the one calling the shots, now the reins were in the hands of absolute retards like Olympius. If you look into the campaign leading up to the 410 sack it's like everything that could have gone wrong for the Romans
did go wrong thanks to Olympius & his cronies, who did things like knowingly marching their armies into Gothic ambushes (resulting in one relief force of 6,000 reaching Rome with only 100 survivors left), and there were actually three different sieges in three years between Stilicho's death and the final Gothic victory.
The Romans kept getting the Goths to momentarily fuck off with exorbitant tribute payments, then immediately & unsubtly started raring to get revenge even though they were in worse shape each time, until Alaric just finally sacked the city out of sheer annoyance. To be blunt, the WRE was acting like a nation-sized lolcow in those three catastrophic years and paid for it direly, they also didn't get much better until
Constantius III started pulling their shit back together after Olympius & all the other senatorial retards had gotten killed or utterly discredited (and then killed) by the Gothic clusterfuck.
Also that business with Stilicho wasn't a one-off, some decades later the equally worthless nigger emperor Valentinian III personally murdered
Flavius Aetius (the general who saved the West from Attila, and probably a half-Goth because the province he came from - Moesia - was overrun by the Goths some time before his birth) out of paranoia, egged on by yet more worthless Senators who wanted them both out of the way to seize power for themselves. Then
that is what precipitated the 455 sack of Rome by the Vandals...
