I had a chance to visit China recently and can confirm.

I recall in one instance when I was walking alone from my tour group, some of those cops stopped me and asked me for my passport. Thankfully my tour group was there to clear it up and tell them I was with the group and the cops left me alone.

To put it simply from a first hand perspective, China is not the country be a fool and fuck around. And those auxiliary cops are always there in someway.

Yeah, I used to fly in and out of China all the time and I have never had a device searched. Zero times. Usually they don't even look at or scan my luggage at the airport. You go through immigration and that's it.
