Anyone who's raised children (i.e. not Nick, his children's mummy and daddy are known as "iPad" and "the church") knows that they are generally dumb (in that they have a poor overall understanding of the world), yet particularly smart about things that interest them. There's nothing like a child's ability to learn something on the fly, especially when they're told they can't do it (e.g. "don't go in this safe that I'm constantly parading around!"). On the balance of probabilities, I find it hard to believe that out of a five-child household, at least one of them WOULDN'T try to access his drugs, and given his rapidly diminishing mental state, wasn't afforded the chance to. His confusion about this fact is part of what's so aggravating about his attempts at apologetics, he will never quite understand just how poor of a parent he is.
