Hollywood and entertainment, IMO, have a lot of blame with it too. Books and movies had been making Asylums seems like nightmare hell visions and One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest really led an anti mental hospitalization effort. As great as that movie is, there's no doubt that the underlying theme is most mentally ill people just need a good talking to and not kept confined in a 'system' in any way. (Secret of NIMH also has that as a general theme too a bit later)

It's not even them pushing to prevent banning the surgery. No one is trying to ban it for adults of legal age who want to go through the proper channels for such a thing. I overheard someone earlier talking today about how everyone hates Trump and won't have an airport named after him. That struck me as cope given when you stop and think about it, Donald Trump's fingerprints are going to be all over the US for decades.
