I think he has always been supported by his mother. The rather minimal employment he has posted about publicly is not the type that you can sustain yourself with. Nominally he would be considered an academic, but he's never taught classes or anything that took any real time to do. I looked into every single so-called academic paper he ever did and he was almost always a third string co-author.

He had a single instance of him being listed as the lead author on a paper, but almost all of his are co-written with some guy named Myron Orfield. I suspect that any real role he had was as a researcher for Orfield, who actually is a respected academic and Brookings Institute fellow.

And all of it is incredibly dull, all related to supposed housing discrimination and housing policy - something that could have come from the mouth of any liberal academic.

Weirdly Stancil is even worse at dealing with trolls that Fatrick. Fatrick just repeats his "Enjoy prison, stalker child" catchphrase and blocks people while Stancil will type out a screed on how he has "a Masters in post-reconstruction racial conflict" not a "degree in black people".
