Who's "crying"? Nobody said they haven't hired any engineers. I said I didn't see any of them doing much for the betterment of mankind. Bespoke rent-a-data-centers might count in your world, I guess, but it's a far cry from building reusable self-landing rockets and functional space ships that can return astronauts from the ISS when even Boeing couldn't manage it.

The snacks really aren't the problem, they're a symptom. My point is that physicality has been superceded in childhood activities, and it stems from that root. Ironically, to your point, strict parenting accelerated the transition, rather than reducing it. How many horror stories do we have now of parents being threatened with criminal neglect charges for letting their kids go out and just do shit? How many stories of forced sports kids turning sour on the attempted forceful solutions must we repeat before we recognize that while a child hardly has choice, they absolutely have the ability to do nothing, to much anguish from parents who's kid just shut down and stopped cooperating entirely.
Think about how much the world has changed over the last 100 years. People used to be much more social. They actually met and did things in person. They were part of sports leagues, they went out hunting, they went out dancing. They biked. They did woodworking, machine repair, yard work. There was much less junk food. Women actually cooked real meals from fresh food. Most people didn't dine out all the time.
If I have to guess, that money is grossly mismanaged through school unions or the local government. Add in the dysfunctional demographic and you get a recipe of disaster.
