I worked as a cashier in a grocery store for a few years, and anecdotally, my impression was that around 80% of the people who pulled out their ebt card were the "government handouts are my job" type. Many of them had had their card so long and swiped it so many times that the stripe was worn out and they'd just hand it to me with a dismissive "you need to punch the numbers" (translation: manually enter the card number to complete the transaction).
