Before the advent of modern medicine, the average lifespan was considerably shorter than it is now. Plus, people were less concerned with education or career advancement and wanted to start their adult lives ASAP. Hence, people got married younger back in the day.

The average was dragged down by infant mortality, if you made it to adulthood, you could still reasonably live into your 70s+
