Yeah, that's better (I almost forgot about Sazae-san, that's another clue the NHK polling was skewed). I think this helps that this is just before anime started taking a turn for the worse (or at least before Code Geass came in), so it definitely feels more genuine, though it also showed that titles we really love over here like Cowboy Bebop and Escaflowne really and truly never did hit it off over there. Tom and Jerry being on there threw me off for a moment before I remembered, "Anime is animation over there." But then I just got more confused as to why it's actually on there, and is the only non-Japanese title up there.

And there are many anime shows on that list that have never even been brought over here - and those I'm not certain would hit it off with anime fans here.

(I also question that this is when anime "started taking a turn for the worse." It had already been going in that direction for a while.)

You would hardly believe how popular Tom and Jerry are in Japan. They're some of the most popular Western cartoon characters there.

Pretty much, sadly.

But wait, I thought Ultimate Muscle as an anime did poorly over there? 4KIDS after all personally paid for more episodes to be made. (Used to think that's what they did with Sonic X, but far as I know, they weren't involved with the production in any way.)

Yeah, I know there's a lot of differences between decades, and it's one of those things where you get a different response depending on who you ask when the "golden age" was. I personally noticed quality in modern anime changed right around 2005/2006, and not just because they got out of their awkward tween stage (as I like to call the transition from cel to digital). I've also noticed a common ground in MAL new-taku weebs hardly watching anything from before 2005, which makes me think they're either not into cel-animated shows, or that was when the ecchi/harem anime really began getting popular and over-saturating the market. (Or a little bit of both.)

You're right, that's actually really surprising to me, never would've guessed that.

But that just brings up some fridge horror that the direct-to-video "original" movies must sell really well over there :(.

that is what makes it a dead give away that mostly Otaku and Younger people voted in the poll.
Of course. Doesn't help when you're not taking someone who's not in that demographic into account.

It wouldn't surprise me if studios sometimes keep that in mind when they make these films, or no doubt, have been told to do more of these from those foreign subsidiaries.

T&J's impact in Japan was really thanks to TV since they never had these screen theatrically before the 1960's I've read. Being exclusive to television must've gave them some prominance that certainly wasn't felt over here. Also influenced certain anime that took a stab at the "Cat and Mouse" formula along the way.

They did, but Kinnikuman is still a rather well-known franchise in Japan.

If I'm reading Japanese Wikipedia right, the movies have all been dubbed over there. Whether they sell or not I can't tell ya.

As with everything else, I can technically like anything so long as it appeals to my sense of story.

My favorite manga is a no contest with Berserk and my favorite anime series is probably all of Shakugan No Shana (1-3, and even S). I am definitely not a fan of dubs and most of the time, cannot even stomach a second of them. The only exception being Speed Grapher, which I think is better than the original Japanese.

I am not a fan whatsoever of never-ending series, like the big 3 of shonen (and Fairy Fail) and I can't stand anything CLAMP. And I have no idea why JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is popular. I tried to watch the first 11 episodes and I would rate it a literal 0/10.

Speed Grapher

The anime has been popping up in recommendations as of late, I've noticed. Probably is a sign I should get to it ASAP, since I've had plans to watch it for like three years at this point.

and I can't stand anything CLAMP.

I don't blame you, honestly. Outside of Cardcaptor Sakura (even though I've actually been complaining about some issues I have with it for a year now), as much as I love their art, that's all they have going for them in the long-run (best use of their character designs was Shamanic Princess--wait, they had nothing to do with that? Dammit). Their story-telling is a mess, and that's made their CLAMP-verse a clusterfuck. Like, I do get what they were going for with some of their ideas: I like the setting to Chobits; the romance in Wish between a rich doctor and the angel he saved had me hoping I'd like it by the end; what I've read so far in xxxHOLiC intrigues me; I actually do want to read/watch Magic Knight Rayearth and Angelic Layer; the mindfuck that is Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE sounds too stupid to not check out.

But when it comes to looking back on these stories, especially as an adult, they have some problems that makes me wonder how much they planned ahead. 'Course, the only ending of theirs I thought was perfect was CCS, but now they had to screw that up over nostalgia in making the Clear Card sequel. I only plan to watch the OVA in September as a test to see if I'm going to bother watching the TV series next year, but I'm honestly not looking forward to it.

My friend buys me random anime he finds every year and XxxHolic was one of them. It looked interesting from a design standpoint, but when I sat down to watch it, it became immediately apparent that it was show that thought it was so much smarter than it actually was. Like, it had Hallmark card level 'depth', yet its wikipedia article touts how all the writers "Thought long and hard over everything, especially how the characters talked, etc". If that was them trying hard, I'd hate to see them half-ass it. Wikipedia also said it was seinen genre, which I cannot fathom. They target females, how the hell is it an older male demographic? And if so, it's the worst seinen series I think, ever.

I thought maybe I just wasn't smart enough to get the Japanese occult being shown, so I looked at fan comments on subbed episodes on Youtube, and rather than any intelligent talk, it was all fangirls "Squee, lol, this is so cute" kind of comments.

Yeah, it's dumb. And I'm sure even if I was a girl (with the same sensibilities in writing I have), I would hate it just the same.

Does anyone remember in Stardust Crusaders when Hol Horse steals the guys' truck then the next episode has them suddenly riding in some kind of giant, faggoty Liberace chariot without a single explanation beyond, "They now have a chariot"? Also it's never even brought up or seen again?

Araki is a fucking God.

Lol wow, can I just say CLAMP fans are insufferable? Since when was CLAMP ever "smart", like, let's be honest here. Having interesting ideas doesn't mean they're automatically smartly done.

I'm also well-aware of how hilariously-bad the off-modeling gets for that anime. That's actually part of the reason I plan on watching it--when, I dunno. Maybe when I read more of the manga or something.

Best part is how fucking manly they still look riding it.

They just know where the money comes!

Sometimes cartoons don't need to be explained!

More like one of the worst writers I have ever seen.
See, Araki gets by via making his bullshit entertaining. He can take a shitty idea and make you enjoy it.
inconsistency with character designs
I feel this was more of an issue in the first half of JoJo but as he got more confident in his art style it kind of settled down. Jonathan, Joseph, Jotaro, and Josuke all look critically different from their debuts, but Giorno, Jolyne, and Johnny/Gyro more or less stayed the same (minus the massive art style change he goes through in part 7, though even then their designs didn't change on the same level as, say, Jotaro or Josuke, the latter of whom started out with gloves in the manga that just disappeared completely).

I've finally gotten around to reading Berserk, and well, fuck. This is fantastic, but it's so fucked up.

See, that's just not for me. I hate over the top spectacle, regardless if it's entertaining or not (and I certainly don't think JoJo is); I need detail and logic in my stuff.

And yes, Berserk. Keep going. It is the best manga around, by far. How far did you get so far? I read all of volumes 5-14 in one day my first time because I just couldn't stop.

I've been forcefully pacing myself, but I just finished up the Golden Age arc. My favorite secondary Hawk was Judeau, he didn't deserve what he got. But then again, almost none of them did. (:_(

I read the entirely of Berserk in single day during the last long hiatus. Now am just waiting for translates of the latest chapters. How Miura was able to keep the art amazing from the beginning to the current chapters still shocks me.

But you know Guts feels the same way. I find what happened to Pippin to be the most horrifying, though. I actually think volumes 20+ are my favorite, when Guts begins to descend a lot further.
