I can agree that the security was lacking, but people have a very unrealistic expectation of what should occur in these events. I’m not claiming to be an expert, but this isn’t like going to a Bulls, Yankees, or Cowboys Game. You rarely, if ever, have structured security like you do for mass public events. Metal detectors for sports stadiums is still a fairly recent thing, it used to only be government offices and courthouses that had that.Metal detector gates and wands are very basic security tools
They should have been checking tickets, at minimum, but ask yourself, when was the last time you have encountered any level of security beyond that? Last time for me was a year ago at a Saints game.
This was a fairly small event, all things considered, in a safe college town. You’re going to have some minimum amount of security set by the university and/or whoever is insuring the event. And that’s probably about it. You’ll get some rent-a-cops with batons who can control a crowd if a fight breaks out but why are people expecting the sort of security you’d only find in stadiums?
The shooter was also in a completely separate building, away from the event. Sure, security was lacking, but it’s not like having more standard security would have changed anything.
