Your employer forces you to install an app on your personal phone? If an employer requires you have a specific tool to perform your job they should be required to provide that tool. What happens if you don't have a cell phone?
One of the companies I used to work for, which had multiple branches scattered around the state, decided that rather than have IT deal with password resets people would instead install an app on their phone so they can reset their own password.

The day of launch, after everyone crossed their T's and dotted their I's (i.e. sending reminder emails on the weekly with attached instructions), IT got SWAMPED with calls because people just refused to read the emails. Majority of the complaints were regarding their accounts being locked out because one of the requirements to activate the app was to reset your password for the first time so it syncs up with your windows account on the server. So IT (mostly me) had to walk them through on how to set up the app and reset their password.

Of all the major players of 2016, only Marco Rubio seemed to be quick on his feet enough to figure out which way the wind was blowing and reposition accordingly.

Marco Rubio is Hispanic, and its in his blood to play all those stupid machismo alpha male games to the hilt. He came at Trump, Trump rolled him over and asserted dominance, now Rubio is his bitch for life. It isn't that complicated to understand once you internalize your secret Aryan racial knowledge of the Hispanics (North American) versus those of the Continent.

There’s a reason helpdesk starts with ‘hel’. So glad I don’t deal with that shit in my job.
I didn't have a choice. The IT department was tiny. Aside from me there was the manager, two coders, and the server guy that lived in another state and did shit remotely.

Once in a while the manager for the Manhattan branch ( who was the son of the CEO ) would throw his two cents in regarding tech/IT related stuff but it was the kind of advice where he would say it but you do the exact opposite because he was a fucking idiot that had no idea wtf he was talking about.

Eat a tide pod, nigger. At least prior gens knew better.

10-15 years ago, the most annoying people on my domain were the boomers who needed to be shown repeatedly how to attach a .pdf to an email. But they were mostly harmless and knew (generally) that this was a tech they had to begrudgingly put up with for a while until they die/retire.

Now? Its retarded zoomers who somehow are even less self aware when it comes to navigating a simple network workflow at a business if it doesn't have hand holding instructions and flowery UI that makes it look like a mobile game. And they will dead ass look you in the eye and expect you to dumb down everything for them.

The competency crisis is starting.
It's not my problem anymore, professionally anyway, but the fact that now no one much under 38 appears to understand how the basic Windows directory structure works is horrifying. That's without even getting into identifying file extensions.

Not 1 in 200 of these people would survive the days of Linkin Park - Numb.exe.

I understand they're not exactly tech professionals but when I was having packet loss issues and my ISP sent a guy out all he did was look at his tablet and hit test. Said I had no packet loss. Said the issue was between my PC and my router.

So I opened a few command prompt windows and started 100 ping tests to my gateway and to a public DNS server and showed no packet loss to my router and 20% to this website. I opened another to Google and it was the same 20% loss.

He didn't know what command prompt was, what pinging was, or what packets were. He hit test on his tablet and it said ok. Took another 3 techs to get someone even A+ cert level competent who quickly resolved my issue.

Good luck when this next generation who can't use file Explorer takes over.

I remeber when having a tape drive for your C64 meant you were hot shit
Tape drive was pretty standard for C64/Atari 800. Turbo systems were less common. A floppy drive tho, that meant you were high class.

But sure, the TikTok generation will save us all.
I wouldn't discount them, for real. They had it bad, and there are signs that things are righting themselves. But they sure got a handicap handed down on them.

I wrote most of a novel on an Amstrad CPC in the late 80’s and lost it all when the 3” floppy drive died (yes, 3”, not 3.5”) and I couldn’t obtain a replacement. I remeber when having a tape drive for your C64 meant you were hot shit. Always makes me laugh when someone who started computing with Win7 and has never even touched MS-DOS thinks they’re a tech genius.

Zoomers can’t even fucking read for the most part and I’ve never met one that could string a sentence together without 6 “like”s and 7 “um, y’know”s. A maximum attention span of 4.5 minutes doesn’t help much either. But sure, the TikTok generation will save us all.

Can you retards please stop sperging over your gay ass generation conflicts and muh computers please?

I've seen things your generation wouldn't believe. BBS boards on fire off the flame wars of Trek. I heard 56k modems screech in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to be silent, youthoid.

No, probably not.

Which was the era of peak internet/powerusers? Was it the 90s or the 2000s? I could see it argued either way. By the mid 2000s even Linux was getting easy enough to install and use that people tried it for fun. They hadn't really started dumbing computers down, there was a huge flourishing of all kinds of different tech, and you didn't have to make things mobile friendly (aka dumbed down for touchscreen).

The 90s were a lot more wild west but you had to have a lot more base knowledge to use computers since they were still so finnicky. That and internet access was really expensive still. Internet culture was a lot more limited but those who were able to log onto IRC or even Yahoo Chat could access and build it.

LISTEN UP, Kiddos!

I was there, in the ancient days, playing with rocks and shit. Tossing branches at at a fence and using my caveman brain to ooga-booga DOS prompts to letting me format my drive to play Zork or something. I AM THE ULTIMATE TECHNOLOGY WIZARD.

You want me to talk about registrar keys? Done. Want me to go into an insanely boring rant about downloading Castle Wolfenstein over a Telnet connection in my hood, which took over three days for my Apple II? I DID THAT I AM THE FUCK TORNADO WIZARD OF COMPUTERS

Sure, I might not now understand things like "AI" and "Social Media" and "Being a good poster" and "Showering" or "Being inside a woman", but I knew things. Things you kids will never grasp. While you are posting your Meta verse avatar talking about how bigotry is bad or something, I was using Phreaking to call ATT reps niggers nonstop while slamming my dick as hard as possible to Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick.

I am important and cool. Don't let my landlord, children, and gay broccoli-headed faggot grandkids tell you otherwise.

It went right up until the widespread adoption of the smartphone. The entire design ethos of it was to be a computing device that didn't require you to understand a single ounce of computing. From the app philosophy and "look and feel" centric design paradigm, it not only lowered the barrier of entry for computer use lower than ever before, but actively lowered the ceiling too. There's nothing useful you can do with file system and directory knowledge on the average smartphone, your barely even permitted access to a file explorer.

The fundamental death of it all was when the expectation became that problems would be solved by easily, quickly downloaded tools and apps someone else made, rather than using foundational knowledge to resolve it yourself. Its not an inherent bad, far more people benefit from the accessibility of installing a one click ad blocker over configuring a pihole or equivalent, but it does reduce the value of that knowledge.

And that's really what did it all in, we hollowed out the value of the middle of the knowledge spectrum. While you need to know this shit to really make the most of the top end of what you can do with computers, there's exceedingly little practical benefit to the average person for knowing that middle space anymore. You're effectively slogging through a whole pile of somewhat complicated shit for no benefit in the hopes that somewhere down the line is something useful. Its really no surprise most people don't bother and that "computer literacy" skills aren't valued.

That Gutfield quote is emblematic of why he is the most watched late night host multiple years running.

It speaks to the heart of the normal American and repeats what they have thought and said to each other for years on prime-time tv.
  • "Trump should lock-em up!"
  • " Trump should go after them for what they did!"
  • "If they are going to break the law and do this, we need to punish them!"
  • "All is fair play, they brought this on themselves!"
Chuck's NeoCon idea of "Losing with dignity", and "Republicans when in power should NEVER wield it. (that's for Democrats)" is so out of style since 2016 at latest 2020. The fact that majority of good things Trump has gotten done this term is from bucking the Republican trend and actually WIELDING POWER AND USING IT, is why we have things like:
  • No murders in 7 days in D.C.
    No Border Crossings
Tariffs and massive investments in our country
  • (at least 6) Multiple wars have stopped since he got into office
  • Closure of USAID, Institute of Peace (which sowed leftist terror cells across the world and in the USA itself),
  • Redistricting Texas and many states
  • etc...
Republicans have seen the benefits of power and also what is at stake if they don't use it NOW and use it AGGRESSIVELY!
Democrats have told on themselves too many times to back away and play victim:
  • We need to pack the supreme court
  • We need judges to stop the president (lawfare)
  • We need to find anything to GET TRUMP.
  • Make Trump and his friends FELONS.
  • Lets get Trump taken off the ballot in states!
  • Lock up Bannon and his friends!
  • We will residistrict MORE!
  • We will give AMNESTY if we win!
  • WAR IS GOOD TO GET PUTLER!!!
  • We needed to lie about Biden, Hunter laptop, corruption, etc... because we are the Vanguards of Democracy!
  • It is GOOD to cancel elections like Europe because that is the sign of a healthy Democracy!
  • We need to fund ISIS using Institute of Peace and USAID to get the REAL BAD GUYS!
  • Trump has no right to take away tax dollars from PBS, NPR, and other gov contractors, we want to shrink the budget but not that way!!! (they want Republicans to not have cash on hand to do anything).
  • Policing crime neighborhoods is impossible, infact we shouldn't have police at all!
  • Rules for thee and not for me, (J6 trials, illegal lockups, forced confessions, honey pots. Meanwhile Antifa and BLM can burn down cities and take over police stations with 0 consequences or arrests. Remember CHAZ)
  • etc....
  • etc.....
