Power leveling here but tumblr had a civil war about this a few years back. Just look into "ace discourse". Someone who genuinely doesn't desire romantic or sexual relationships would be different than the majority population and would belong in the LGBT community, but since that seems more like a "modifier" to existing sexual orientation rather than an orientation of itself I guess those demi people (the real ones, not people mistaking getting to know someone for demi something) are just an inconvenient technicality.

The answer to all of this is that LGBT (or Gender and Sexual minorities) as a movement long ago changed from anything close to a coherent political project into a type of online identity branding and self-actualization exercise. My own opinion is that identity as a concept is inherently illusory, self-narratives are inherently individualized and inaccessible to others, and the attempts to make it legible and known inherently tie to deep instincts of coalition building and status competition. A political program can consolidate identity groups together for a time, but eventually the contradictions become too acute and it fragments. It's happened again and again, forever, on the left and right, and even prior to those labels even making sense.

Same reason the alt-right died, same reason the anti-war movement died, same reason even feminism is now a mismash of groups often fighting against each other, they stopped being a unified doctrine, a unified religion, long ago, they just keep the label like protestants and Mormons do with Christianity.

LGBT is particularly bad because with transness, membership is entirely down to self-definition, so there is effectively no gatekeeping or praxis enforcement, which is always the quick death of any ideological movement.

These topics aren't going to go away, but whatever the new synthesis will be in the years to come isn't going to be this umbrella for every faggot with enough GIMP skills to make a flag. That unity is gone.
