And that's why it's a social contagion. People can't leave the cult without alienating all of their friends.Unless I want to alienate a bunch of my IRL friends and become a recluse lol

Yeah, this is one of the tricky bits - cult has a generally negative tonal connotation, but I think just like "mental illness", it's worth defanging and seeing merely as an observation relative to the trans situation based on its symptoms, rather than a value judgment. For instance I think part and parcel if you broke down the definitional aspects of gender dysphoria and mental illness and evaluated them (IE something that is mentally damaging to experience that you feel you need to get some kind of medical answer to), I think a lot of even trans folks would agree with you that they align, they just don't like the stigma associated with the term, because they see it as having an implicit value judgment attached.People can't leave the cult without alienating all of their friends.
I remember when the tucutes started popping up around 2018 with their whole "you don't need dysphoria to be trans" spiel. The prevailing thought before then was that trans people desired to present as the opposite sex to relieve an intense internal sense of discomfort, and allowances were made because the average person doesn't want a fellow to suffer internal anguish. The tucutism implies that being transgender is something one can choose at the drop of a hat, which further implies that if someone makes fun of a trans person, they are criticising them as they would someone with terrible fashion sense and not some immutable characteristic. This plus the motte-and-bailey strategy of using the trans identity as a defence for inappropriate behaviour has shorn a lot of goodwill towards trans-identifying people.Too bad for them that HRT and surgery ceases to be medical (and therefore covered by healthcare/the government) and begins to be merely cosmetic if we convince the world that dysphoria isn't mental illness, because otherwise it's no longer something to be suffered from.
The gray area with MtF’s is too wide to even pick at one kind of ulterior motives, but generally nothing feels more like being gaslit than allies who very much involve themselves in arguments around gender ideology, yet manage to still be spouting how, “nobody would ever willingly choose to be part of a more marginalised group”.tl;dr: Cluster Bs want to be oppressed without experiencing any of the internal oppression.
Hard agree. I have left many friends behind due to their overwhelming "TRANS RIGHTS AFE HUMAN RIGHTS" mantras they spammed nearly everyday online. I was once supportive until about 2018 when I noticed just how strange the whole thing had gotten. Even so I tried to just be quiet about it out of fear of being ostracized at first, but it was when the Hogwarts spectacle happened that I became fed up with every part of the movement and wasn't going to silence myself anymore. And that's why it's a social contagion. If your friends make you "choose" between an opinion on a social contagion or their friendship I'm sorry but those are just not real friends.

I’ve heard it essentially being compared to Scientology, I can definitely see parallels with how you pay exorbitant amounts of money (good ol sunk-cost fallacy) and how those who leave are treated as essentially subhumans and cut off from their family and friends. As opposed as I am to the whole belief system, that everyone "knows their innate gender" and should be trusted to prematurely neuter themselves and to be allowed in sex-exclusive spaces based on scout's honor, I can't in good faith call it either a cult or a religion. The formal definition of cult requires a central person or object and casually enjoying George Carlin standups taught me that the bridge to religion is that "the guy's been dead a long time".
Gender ethos doesn't have a central person or object like that. They will still snatch up and brainwash your closest friends and family like the Cult of Set, but there's no Thulsa Doom orchestrating all of this. Have there been any examples of an undisputed cult being ruled by an oligarchy, which could be a stand-in for WPATH or Steven Universe fanfiction writers on Tumblr circa 2013? Marci Bowers isn't venerated, but WPATH's word is treated as gospel by them.
There are plenty of people who see themselves as the leader, from Brianna Wu and Tony Reed through to nobodies like Zinnia Jones. The real leaders are the complex web of profiteers in the medical profession. But I do take your point, there is no L. Ron Hubbard or Jim Jones calling the shots. As opposed as I am to the whole belief system, that everyone "knows their innate gender" and should be trusted to prematurely neuter themselves and to be allowed in sex-exclusive spaces based on scout's honor, I can't in good faith call it either a cult or a religion. Pizza parties with the Gay-Straight Alliance etc. are the equivalent of the Hare Krishnas offering a free meal, or pizza parties with the local church group. It starts out simple - you try sissy porn or you join a hobby with a large trans contingent or you play with cross-dressing.
This is a strength of the movement too; if there were a Troon Pope, a Czxr of Trans, people could get clear answers on matters of doctrine.Gender ethos doesn't have a central person or object like that. When the Mormons do that, it's posthumous baptism. They definitely do an attempt at ancestral worship, the way they keep trying to make Joan of Arc trans and William Shakespeare gay.
Ironically, you say that it's a strength but not having clear policy/demands has terrible staying power. If nobody knows what you actually want, no one will trust that there will be an end to your demands when they've been met. It's great for dodging accountability, but terrible for building trust and support from the greater public. This is a strength of the movement too; if there were a Troon Pope, a Czxr of Trans, people could get clear answers on matters of doctrine.
Instead one TRA will say "nobody thinks X that's a strawman" while a different TRA pushes for X. "Trans*" went from mandatory to hatespeech overnight; if there were someone in charge they would have at least put out a press release. Is <horrible person> a real transwoman? Ask the Troon Pope and get a final answer.
It should be, yeah. Trans movement success is like the "bumblebees shouldn't fly" meme. It's great for dodging accountability, but terrible for building trust and support from the greater public.

As a lesbian, I myself "fake wokeness" all the time, and it's relatively easy for me to do so, since liberals just assume by default, that as a gay person, I must be a turbo-liberal that agrees with all of their viewpoints. I have noticed that after Trump won the 2024 election, it instantly became much more acceptable to say slurs again and publicly criticize transgenderism. I don't think people overnight became more right-wing but that a right-wing candidate winning confirmed to people that others are much more right-wing than they thought, and that everyone is just too scared to speak their mind, in fear of liberal freakouts and losing their jobs.
I was wondering what troons you have to deal with on the daily when you replied to my post earlier to be extremely cautious, but if this is your usual contact with them that makes a lot of sense. This is awful, my sincerest condolences. I'm feeling second-hand rage at this creature.Goddamn trannies are so insufferable. As y'all are acutely aware, free speech is a hot topic right now. So I'm chatting with some peeps and the we're talking about politics as it happens. I casually mention that unjust laws are worth resisting. The key point I was trying to make is that people need to take care of their health such that they CAN resist. The tranny in the room then says, "I can't risk going to jail, that would be a death sentence. They would deny me my HRT." So I say, "That makes you a good little slave then. You'll do whatever the state tells you so you stay out of jail." And he fucking flew off the handle.
The tranny just outed himself as an agent that would betray any real revolution fighting for freedom because his titty skittles are more important. And of course he tries to accuse me of being an anti-tranny CHUD because I implied he has to fight too. Yes I do hate trannies and this particular tranny was a classic example of why I hate troons. He tried to make it out as just classic unfounded bigotry.
I don't have high hopes, but maybe that troon's episode planted the seed of doubt in some of the bystanders present.
Troonydom, depression, circlejerking, terminally online. The second you let slip you want out, you're exiled. "what if we DIDN'T sit around jerking off and doomposting all day?". Or worse, "yo bros I just went for a walk, it made me so happy man, i'm gonna uninstall twitter and WoW". gone, immediately. Because the thought that this person is ahead of you on the road to recovery AND is reminding you that it's possible to get started down this path is heresy. And that's why it's a social contagion. People can't leave the cult without alienating all of their friends.
