Some of the reasons why transitioning is still treated the way it is is at the feet of academia, IMO. If it was actually lessening mortality, then there is an ethical question, not unlike the use of opioids to manage chronic pain. But especially in the last 15-ish years the narrative has become more and more essentialized to the point where the benefit in a general sense is understood as so definitive that it outweighs any harm, when the researchers themselves aren't minimizing the harm caused by pretending that a neovagina or neophallus is in any way equivalent to the real thing. You can see how much the validation leads the research agenda now, studies coming out to see if horse piss pills modify a neovagina so it analogous to an actual one, or desperate studies looking for some correlation between trooning and brain morphology so they can point to woman brain. These aren't questions that even make sense if you view them in the context of all our other knowledge on human biology, but trans research is so biased in a sympathetic direction to trans people that it is essentially sanctioning, enabling and encouraging their self-mutilation.
