This has to be the best evidence he's using a voice changer. Yup that clip is why I’m on the side of close microphone + voice training. I’d like to see a poll on this.
Even the close microphone and voice training thing doesn't make sense for that clip due to Mald's own excuse. If it were just microphone proximity Mald wouldn't have needed to claim "2nd puberty", and voice training doesn't suddenly fail to work just because someone else is holding the mic. What I will say about that clip is that not only does he not have control over the audio in it, it's also in an open convention room floor with shit acoustics and really that was all Mald ever would have needed to say about it.
As an audio guy, his voice never sounded right to me—like there was a hollow nature to it. Reminiscent of excessive EQ/filtering. We all know he modifies his voice, but I was curious so I loaded the full ~5 minute clip into RX and looked at the spectrum. I didn't expect to be this right:
