As an audio guy, his voice never sounded right to me—like there was a hollow nature to it. Reminiscent of excessive EQ/filtering. We all know he modifies his voice, but I was curious so I loaded the full ~5 minute clip into RX and looked at the spectrum. I didn't expect to be this right:

Timecodes can be seen along the bottom of the screenshots. Notice how there are these huge holes in the mid-range, but only when it's maldy who is talking?

Natural sound simply doesn't work like this. He can't really claim this is some noise filtering setup, since you can see he lets the high-end hiss from his S and H sounds bleed through, leaving this big notch filter-like hole. If anything, his audio has the most high frequency (noise range) content out of anyone on the panel.

The hard cutoff around 15k you see is from lossy compression and isn't anything he did himself.

I think he's got a bad take here, but I've left some extremely rude comments on one of his videos, and rather than sweep it he very politely addressed what I said. I don't believe he's a disingenuous or manipulative individual from my experience.

I can respect that. Its why I have a sort of respect for the people who made dustborn, I've seen dissenting comments, and rather than tons of bans, they allow, and even politely reply. (on steam forums)

That may be it then. Perhaps it's not him altering his voice per se, but something done through the mic. In any case, it just stood out to me pretty much immediately that he sounded artificially deep in the first clip I saw of him (it was a montage of comments he made about Stop Killing Games while livestreaming).

It's a mode of speaking specifically meant to hide the speaker's regional accent to help with clarity. It may help you understand him easier, but it allows you to understand how much of a cunt he is in turn.

America had its own version too for cinema.

But yeah, that "posh" accent is more or less learnt rather than natural. I'm unsure if you use it long enough it just becomes your default or what, but it's like permanently erasing a part of yourself just to sound like some posh pretentious prick. Maybe there's some effect on the psyche by doing that. Mald changed his voice to sound more masculine and authoritative so he genuinely believes that. Same for how adopting RP makes Hayes thinks he's smarter than he actually is.

Those reddit jannies working overtime to stop SKG, I knew they were stupid but I don't know why they would be against it. I thought Reddit heckin' loved vidya gaems.

Although to be fair to them, I've heard Reddit is largely on board with SKG so maybe it's just jannies being jannies.

Now that you've brought this up, I can't not hear it. Especially from that clip. It's as if he didn't do anything for sibilance and made it worse by notching out the entire mid range, so all you get is his bass bullshit and then a bunch of crunchy noise at the top.

There was an instance a few months back with clips, where his audio plugins or drivers had shit the bed, and his normal voice did indeed come through without him noticing because he wasn't monitoring the outbound audio. Wish I could find it.
