I mean, it signals general trends of really poor social skills. Obviously, expecting workers to prostrate themselves upon the customer isn't going to happen. However, if this article is at all literal, it suggests workers aren't even acknowledging the customers at all. At the risk of sounding a lot bitchier than I hopefully am, I have had this happen to me, and my thoughts were "Are you stoned right now? Do I have your attention? How can I know you get my order right if you're not even going to show me you're not half-asleep on the job?" Even a singular half-assed "what can I get you" would dispel those worries and not even trying to socialize at all isn't going to help those much-needed skills.

It also signals to me that you're embracing the whole "I am a replaceable economic unit" mentality. I get that your average food service worker is dead inside but full-on viewing yourself as a mindless work drone is going to wreck your self-esteem and serves to perpetuate that kind of work culture. I can even imagine it to be a self-fulfilling prophecy. After all, you're showing as much emotion as a computer, if not less, so why not having one of them serve your function and lose nothing? Or, hell, why not Mr. Ethnic Diversity? He can work for cheaper and you clearly aren't enthusiastic about your job, so it's a "win-win"!

Outside of places like Manhattan, dorms are a rip off that charge more than it would cost to get a private studio apartment for a tiny shared bedroom with no kitchen or bathroom.
Kids still manage to set dorms on fire with fans; you want to trust them with a kitchen... dorm life has janitors that clean the shared bathrooms and cafeterias with a meal card included in the cost of the dorm. The dorms are also on campus so walking to class is easy, it's like a summer camp with schooling for young adults, only they get the summers off.

Or just replace them with machines already?

Gen Z is malding at the fact that they'll never own homes, they'll never form families, they'll always work a miserable 9-5 for a job they hate, and they will live and die as nothing more but as a replaceable worker drone that probably will be replaced by something automated.

They rebel in the only way they can: by showing their utter distaste for the world.

Even when I have worked shitty jobs I always tried to instill in me and my coworkers that even if it is shitty, if you have pride in your work you'll feel better at the end of the day. Your other point is one I haven't considered, if we accept the cashier as just the human interface of the shop-register, we accept it can be done by nearly anyone. Which is true, but the modicum of sociability required meant that non-englush speaking haitians and indians who don't stop talking to their friends on the phone for a second did not meet the "anyone" qualifier.

I do think the loss of camaraderie we have with people in our communities is a national issue and not limited to customer service. I find most people nowadays approach each other with vague suspicion if not outright hostility.

Personally I’d say multiculturalism plays a big role in this loss of being able to or even wanting to relate to each other, but there are other reasons. We don’t feel community, we just happen to exist side-by-side.
It didn't help some of them were openly talking about putting some of us down like dogs less than two years ago just because we didn't "trust da science".
I should have mentioned that. You also have two very broad and completely different value systems constantly side-eyeing each other. All these vast divides and we all get forced to interact to keep the machine chugging along. The same machine most people feel they’re getting screwed by. No kidding people grow resentful.

So said Gen-X
So said Millennials.

This is not breaking new ground. Yes. Every generation was fucked in a brand new way that didn't exist before and is totally worse and incomparable.

You'd think with this forum our debate would be, who's hotter: Laura Boebert or AOC?????

Hit Winner (military medal) for Boebert. Optimistic (gay pride) for AOC.
Which Boebert are we voting for? The one that looks like grandma or the old pic where she’s cute?

Thumbnails are fucky for me right now, but just google her and you’ll see what I mean.

So in the wake of our latest most blatant example of "Justice dosent exist anymore" Diddy was acquitted on all the major charges and only found guilty of prostitution, I think its fitting to remind people of the following

The united states has the LARGEST prison POPULATION in the whole world, not incineration rate, not per capita, just sheer fucking volume.

China has 4 times our population and we have more prisoners than them but we cant convict the diddler

Never trust the chi coms. Do they count slaves and political prisoners in that number? I'm betting not

It’s funny that before covid science was treated as this thing that can do no wrong and never falls into the traps that religion falls into. The Covid happen you know the rest
