I doubt that they're putting their careers at risk. As part of the plea deal, Assistant County Attorney Kristen Pierce probably gave assurances to Nick that she would fight against the bodycam coming out. As for Judge Wentzell, it would be a bit embarrassing for the appeals court to overturn his decision but that's hardly career ruining. It's part of the judicial process. (Also, it's worth the risk. Most decisions are not overturned.)

Again, I'm not sure there's active corruption going on. It's more like passive corruption. Something akin to 'But for the kids!' and the evils of the mean Internet giving Pierce and Wentzell a higher calling. Some nonsense like that.

OR they don't want the bodycam coming out because, thus far, there has not been any local protest to Nick's plea deal. (The local paper hasn't even covered it.)

If the residents of the County see the body cam, that could change.

My personal theory is that the Sheriff is doing everything in his power to stop the body cam footage because it makes him/ the county look bad. Not necessarily because the officers did anything wrong, but just releasing it puts a permanent record on the Sheriff and the county that someone wanted the body cam footage, and why else would someone want the body cam footage other than to make the county look bad.

It’s complicated, but I think it’s really an ego trip fueled by a local government’s desire to protect their image and reputation.

I think Aaron is probably right, it's small town corruption. They don't want attention and they don't want this shit public for that reason. **MAYBE** there is some kind of deal Nick/Nick's parents had with the prosecution, but I lean more in the direction of just a small town not wanting any attention. Of course, they're getting more attention now than they would have had they just released it, but they're small town boomers, they're not gonna understand how the Internet works

Obviously I don't know for certain, but if there is video evidence of Nick representing a co-defendant there might not need to be a formal complaint from Kayla in order for the ethics committee to start an investigation.
