A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Like others have said, I don't know if the heat is frying my brain but I thought the tweet was something by Warwick Davis and I got unimaginably angry for about three seconds until the full image loaded. Crisis averted.

Anyone else just sickened by the pro-death legislation being debated and passed this week? Approving people to kill themselves and then the baby killer legislation in the same week.

What is it about liberals, when the first time they take power, they immediately allow as many people to die as possible?

That thought has crossed my mind a few times.

In spite of the jostling and 'banter' between them at PMQ, Starmer's never really hammered Farage or Reform UK personally, Moreover, he's said that he understands why people support them and he himself has voiced concerns about Whitey being a stranger in his/her own land.

Starmer IMO wants power and glory but doesn't want all the hard work that goes with it - he's not a Thatcher in that he'll put up a fight, but he's also not a Blair internationally who can at least use charisma and try to win people over to his way of thinking.

If he has indeed 'had enough' then yes death spiraling the party and riling up both sides is one way to turn the masses against him. He knows, however, that he is the only person who can unite the party in a way that Boris Johnson, despite being a buffoon, actually was the glue which held the Tories together. Look what happened to them after he was sacked - Liz Truss couldn't outlast a lettuce and Rishi was just absolutely godawful. Who else will unite the Labour tribe? Any ideas?

Burnham was possibly their last chance, maybe even Owen Smith, but no Labour can never make good choices - well, certainly not since not electing Benn as leader!

Let's also cast our minds back to when Starmer crossed the floor to speak with Farage a few months back after Trump had been declared POTUS... to be a fly on the wall and know what was said.

My take is that Labour thought that Harris would be POTUS and that they'd have an easy five years of being in charge - November 5th (ironically, Bonfire Night in the UK) proved that wasn't to be and Trump has been the proverbial fly in the ointment for them more so than the MP for Clacton.

Therefore, if Starmer can't win and if 170 Labour MP's are prepared to say no to him when the Disability Bill goes before the Commons next month, the writing will be on the wall. Unlike today's free vote, the Labour MP's will be voting on Government Policy and this will be a three-line whip meaning that any MP who refuses to vote 'yes' will have the whip removed, leaving Labour with (checks notes) 233 MP's and therefore a Minority Government.

Now, it is too late call for a GE before the summer, but there is growing talk of a possible one later this year, possibly after the Conference Season, if Purdah does not instead replace this, and before the planned Budget - therefore October or November which would on current trend see Farage installed as PM with over 40% of the electorate backing him.

Whilst Starmer knows he can't and won't win against Farage, at least he can then hope that all questions about Rent Boys, being a possible nonce etc. will go away once the media have their new target in No. 10 and he can make money with talks and lectures on the international circuit (possibly he'll move out of the UK as well).

I'd say there's a good chance that Starmer has had enough (who can blame him, working day in and day out with retarded inepts) and he may even nuke the Disability Vote (if he knows that a) it won't be passed and b) because of a) that this will lead to a VONC and say 'okay, I am calling a GE for early September as I will not have a leadership challenge and I want to be able to push my policies through, no matter what.'

Now, before I'm bombarded by rainbows, who else called an early GE because she couldn't get Brexit done in 2017? Theresa May - and the gamble is very much the same this time around for Starmer; get the gamble right and stay in as PM and then be able to force through any Bills/changes that you want because no Labour MP elected will dare oppose you, or lose and then say 'oh well, Farage has to carry the can now.' This would then make the current Government and sitting of Parliament one of the shortest on record - in fact it would be the fourth shortest in the last 105 years were it to fall anytime between today and early/mid Autumn, with the nine month gap between the February and November 1974 GE's, the 10 month gap of the 1923 and 1924 GE's and the 13 month gap of the 1922 and 1923 GE's.

With Reform UK still doing very well in the polls, and Labour struggling and likely to drop down to 18/19% after today's vote, the odds are that change is coming and sooner than many expected.

Some will be permitted to put up a feigned resistance but if there was a genuine chance it would be defeated they would be forced into lock step in moments.

There is no rebellious Labour MP heart. Just people who need to try harder than some of the others to stay in position so might be allowed to feign freedom of opinion/action.

All of this of course applies to the Tories too. And most of those pretending to be independent thinkers before they resign to be part of other parties are just like the various Tory MPs who are now in Reform's upper echelons. The uniparty marches on.

The asylum seeker was charged with rape and voyeurism after the alleged attack on a woman on June 11.

He appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates' Court earlier this month and has since been remanded in custody.

Local councillors were warned not to speak about the suspect's housing, The Sun has reported.
A council officer raised fears about "community tension", with another privately urging a prominent councillor not to share “privileged confidential information” after he took to social media to express his frustration.

Portsmouth Independents Party leader Cllr George Madgwick said: “This is precisely why the public don’t trust politicians and public bodies: things are hidden that should be disclosed.

"Anyone involved in any form of cover-up from disclosure to the public should question their role in a publicly funded position.”

Portsmouth City Council also appeared to admit that it chose not to make any public comments due to concerns about local residents responding with fury.




A spokesman said: “We knew the Home Office accommodation link would become public knowledge through the court proceedings and, based on events elsewhere in the country, were conscious there may be community tensions related to it.”

However, the revelations were met with fury from both Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick and Reform UK leader Nigel Farage.

A very nuanced take.

My concern, in regards to what you've said (which is very well explained) is that this forthcoming vote could be the bridge too far for some.

Let's remember that Labour styled themselves pre-July 2024 as the party of Social Justice and of 'positive change' - we've seen none of that, all we've seen is that Labour is the actual nasty party which they said that the Tories and Reform UK would be if they were handed power.

To say that 'we will protect the weakest and most vulnerable in society' in June 2024 and then in July 2025 opt to take away what for some is a vital lifeline is beyond evil. We are getting into almost Nazi territory - kill the weak and poor, nobody is allowed to oppose the regime, we must crush all dissidents and make examples out of the enemies.

However, many of these Disabled people will have Social Justice campaigners backing them and I believe that the never-had-a-job-nor-a-bath Socialist Worker types are going to hammer Parliament into voting no.

Let us remember that the gobby and loud Left are more of a threat to the Government than the anti abortion and anti assisted dying protestors who've been at Westminster this week. These protestors were calm and put their point across, with pro-abortion and pro-assisted dying counter-protestors also making their point without any skirmishes or violence between the two. Those who will be saying a firm 'no' to the Disability cuts will be less inclined to be kind and generous in defeat, in fact they will protest, they will be angry and they will use their platforms and presence to say 'bring this evil Government to a halt NOW!'

There are major protests planned over the next few months, with talk of combined action between protest groups and even some of them reaching out to Reform UK and Tory voters asking them to join in a unilateral and universal march against Starmer and Labour. So far, the ones protesting are:

* Just Stop Oil (returning after Ed Miliband 'stabbed them in the back' over drilling in the North Sea)
* Youth Demand
* Palestine Action
* Stop The War (Socialist Worker)
* People’s Assembly (Unions)

These groups will want to win, no matter what - if they bring the Government down or help to bring it down, then provided they get their way it will be deemed as 'a victory'.

All they have to hope for is that Nigel Farage does not become PM... and stopping him may prove a harder task than ousting Starmer and Blue Progress Labour.

Also, a week today (Saturday), Kneecap are playing Glastonbury and will no doubt use their stage time to demand Starmer out. Keep an eye on this as the BBC will have to show their set (though edited) because if they don't there will be mass Licence Fee cancellations by the Left and claims of 'Government cover ups' intended to silence Mo Charah and pals.
