A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

How this site exists and isn't a national fucking scandal is kind of bewildering to me. I don't think I've kept it a secret that I'm moving to London. Well here's a fun game: put in any postcode within the M25 and find a school with more than 50% white British students.

I've been fucking horrified with this site. The nearest school to my new house has over 50% Indian students. That's not a joke. Over 50%. Why even live in England at this point??

I've found nearby schools with over 75% English not first language.

I wasn't planning on sending my son to a private school, because I literally just bought a second house and I'm a little over stretched right now, but what choice do I have? I guess I'll be selling my kidney to loansharks to send my son to a school where they don't give the assemblies in Urdu.

Apparently a school that I live near has less than 4% white british pupils, another nearby one is at 8.8%, I didn't realise they actually collected data on this or that it was anywhere near this bad.

Do they though, or it like in Fr*nce where they get around it by pinpointing sickle cell?
Wouldn't surprise me if literally all the data ever is in some big box somewhere it's just nobody allowed to touch it because muh GDPR or some such similar bollocks.

Appears the data comes from the national schools census and it does seem to line up with the rough ethnic breakdown of the areas where these schools are, but less white.

For example you have this random school in Bradford which is even worse than the ones near me:

It looks to be pretty accurate, but I'm not going to stand outside a school noting down the pupils ethnicities to fact check it.

According to the government website 60.4% of schoolchildren are white british and that is a number that is trending downwards

Sentencing guidelines are fucked and it's only a matter of time until we get an exceptionally ugly challenge to the law.

The sheer fact that a man and a woman convicted of the same crime can receive different punishments is astonishing, the fact that a man with a kid will stand a higher chance of going to prison than a woman with a kid is also particularly grating. These are facts that can be easily obtained via sentencing statistics, and I don't understand why nobody has started the legal challenge to it.

So if we're broadly aware that one group of people is automatically getting a different sentence to another, it checks out that trannies, minorities etc. are each getting different sentences for the same crime.

I've noticed that during summer months and other times of peak travel, incidents like this are getting more and more prevalent.

In addition, there's virtually no trains out of Cardiff today due to track issues (and Chris Brown is at the Principality Stadium tonight).

Almost as if somebody doesn't want us to travel.

Nothing was travelling North of Preston yesterday on the west coast mainline from early afternoon to late evening and not a peep about it on the news.

Instead they’re playing Iranian propaganda nonstop for some reason.

That's strange but not surprising.

A contact of mine works for Network Rail in Canton, Cardiff, and is also fairly active on the Rail UK Forum, so I'll ask him about this on the weekend.

If there's shenanigans, he'll let me know.

They've been collectively looking for a good excuse since Reform passed them in the polls, not exactly a secret how this stuff works.

Not really sure what they are expecting to gain from it if they do boot Starmer out of no 10, if they do what the tories just did of having a new prime minister every few months/weeks in response to opinion polls then by the next election they will be 5+ leaders deep and everyone will be just as fed up of them.
