Andy Warski gave some pretty good insights into addiction when the topic comes up on the Kino Casino. One of the things he mentioned is how every addict has this phase where they think they can come up with a single good idea that'll turn their situation around. This stream is an example of that and like this stream, it usually blows up in their faces.

Several years back, I went to a guy's house who had five kids. He had a pretty similar situation with Nick to where he and his wife homeschooled their kids. Pretty good people, they just kept trying to convert me to Mormonism. But they managed to keep their house clean. A little secret, all it takes is an authority figure saying "No devices until your chores are done" to keep things in order. It's not hard. The fact that Nick can't do it shows how much of a functioning human he's not.

It's the complete lack of personal space and autonomy. Imagine not even having your own space for your own clothes. Instead you go into some giant room, like you live in a family cult or something -- because your mom (no job, full-time nanny) is too lazy to deliver a basket to your actual room and tell you to put it in the drawers. But you only have to do it every couple days.
