You or your spouse of 10 years of marriage minimum has to have paid into it for about 20 years to collect any kind of social security. Also, if you have a disabled child who is on SSI you can leave them your Social Security and they'll get SSDI which again is more money as long as you have no spouse collecting on your social security.

If you didn't pay into for enough years and don't have a spouse who did, then you don't get Social Security. Also, people in prison even if they had enough years paid into it don't get it as the state views it as they're already taking care of your needs, so you don't need Social Security. That's why if you did 30 plus years in the joint and aren't disabled, you're almost better off staying in prison instead of parole or release it's why the old guys in Shawshank Redemption had to bag groceries when released.

I don't know Jack and Tammy's status or how much they or if anything they paid yearly in social security taxes to qualify. SSI on the other hand anyone even children can get as long as they're disabled.
