Yeah, man. I KNOW simply a disgust response doesn’t always equate to something being immoral. I do think that it is a helpful primitive response we have been trained to ignore. So, when I feel grossed out I actually analyze WHY that might be.

Origami is an actual art that begs to mastered. Child coloring books with no original spin are not. And to be honest, if someone likes to color and relax, that’s fine. but if that’s a - idk - actual preschool or elementary school level coloring book? Yeah, I don’t think an adult should be getting some form of enjoyment or relaxation from coloring paw patrol?

Also - I’m not advocating forcefully shutting these things down. Or stopping people doing stupid things. Or jailing them.

But when people are celebrated and encouraged for stupid shit? When the activity is infantile and inappropriate? I have the right to judge it as I see fit. And I judge it as something to be ashamed of.

This shit really bugs me. Why the fuck are you as an adult building with something meant to teach children how to build? Go learn how to use tools like a fucking adult. It's fucking absurd. There's so much cool shit out there adults have access to that we can build with but these fucking people choose to use overpriced plastic children's toys.
 
We have those things it's called bowling, TCG locals, fighting game locals, table top games, board games, paintball, and other shit I'm forgetting.
There is no reason to infantilize it by calling them play dates and adding shit like ball pits.
 
There's no way this isn't a big fetish community that just got discovered. Like... if you dig just a bit deeper, you'd find some inherent infantilization fetish.
 
I was looking for an angle to disagree and say something about how only adolescents worry about how childish they look, but I can't find any reason to disagree in this context.

My disgust reflex is about as insensitive as it gets, reserved for only the most obscene unthinkable fetishes. But apparently, also for this.
 
For a second I thought it was about getting PnP sessions organised and that's something I would have applauded. It's fucking hard to schedule regular sessions with adults who all have shit to do.

I don't think this is any different than grown people watching sports and throwing a tantrum, and it could be even better than that since I don't think those people break random things out of frustration. This is like making fun of people who eat gummy bears, then thinking alcohol and cigarettes cool. Society is cringe
 
I hate the “no fun allowed past 30 because you have to become old and boring, ok?!” Types but I agree that the infantilization of millennials is pretty disturbing. At least get some adult hobbies that don’t involve acting like a kindergartner.

additional thoughts.

adult play is different than child’s play. Play is only engaging if it’s appropriate. If you give a toy for a toddler to a 10 year old, the 10 year old won’t be too happy. There must be some challenge - mastery, socialization, creativity - and the right level for it to be play.

Adults play all the time. Board games, video games (games for adults, no one is playing leap frog at 30), sports, hobbies, crafts. All these things at an appropriate level. That’s why a woman making miniature dollhouses is appropriate is more appropriate than a woman playing with dolls.

It’s as if these people don’t quite get that. It’s as if the last time they felt happiness was as young children. Maybe their brains are SSRI fried or maybe they’re genuinely mentally ill. But they don’t get appropriate satisfaction from adult activities as they should. So they revert to the last time and thing that did bring them happiness.

It remind me of a specific type of female pedophile. Nothing is more repulsive than a preteen/teenage boy to a normal woman. Yet, these creepy female teachers still predate on them for sexual satisfaction. It’s as if they’re stunted. They seek out the infantile and don’t seek out appropriate partners.

It just shows there is something stunted or deformed in their mind. Emotionally, maturity, etc. which makes it so unsettling.
