It's only acceptable to play with kids' toys as an adult if you have kids, and are playing with your kids.

That said, there's plenty of fun to be had as an adult. You're smart enough for board/card/tabletop games. You can play rec sports without being in an unspoken dick-measuring contest with the school jocks. You should have adult money to go shooting, camping, biking, etc.
To be fair, I don't think that children are the ones buying the multi-hundred dollar lego sets. But I also don't get why adults would buy it either. If you want a model of something for some reason than just buy something made out of regular plastic or metal or wood. If you want to build something than learn cad and buy some $50 Ender 3, or make something out of wood. I don't get it.
I know it's not the same, but Lego does sell some kits used for professional and educational applications, such as engineering or architecture.

There's a lot of childish things you can do and be "okay" but sort of on your own. You don't need a group project to facilitate it. You can buy a coloring book and scribble to destress to your hearts content: either an "adult" coloring book or just a kids one. Hell, there are printables online you can find for free. Just as an example. There's also age appropriate things to "play" with as others have mentioned.

This isn't any of that but pure infantilization. It's disturbing to the degree that it is on top of it being able to get gov grants. If adults in your community need better ways to socialize having board game nights, chess/checkers nights, and so on are good ways to do it. More age appropriate things, more mixing in of what adults are usually actually interested in.

This most reminds me of the psychological defense mechanism of regression, which entails reverting back to age-inappropriate behaviors or methods of coping, albeit whatever this is sounds like such an exaggerated instance of it that it could fit on a random textbook example. Splendid use of tax dollars.

There are many other means of handling conflict and stress, and I would imagine that any adult who had to get their shit together after a certain point would have probably matured into finding such another way. It'd follow that this kind of activity would be considered unnatural, then; you're looking at the behavior of the maladjusted through your own lens of one who has managed to become better adjusted.
