I encountered an organization that a) received a government grant (lol) and b) has a mission to bring play dates to grown adults. No, not mentally challenged adults. Normal adults. They say that adults need “play” just as much as kids.
They have ball pits, bubble guns, legos, and stickers. Must be 18+. And it’s not a sex thing.
First of all, as an adult with a family, I already have Lego and sticker parties everyday. But even without my kids, there is not a single day of my adult life I have woken up and thought “yeah, I want to spend my day in a ball pit or playing with Legos. That would be a net positive for me.”
Second of all, when I see a ball pit or bubble gun that children are NOT allowed to use, I feel disgusted. Those are resources for child play and to ban children from their use seems so - gross. They say it’s so adults can escape their daily responsibilities so leave the kids at home… but I’m 99.99% sure no one with kids would want to pay a babysitter to go play with fucking stickers on a Saturday. They are all childless.
Also, “play” for an adult =/= play for a child. Do they not have age appropriate activities to engage in? Sports, board games even. Video games? Drawing, painting, gardening. ANYTHING? Why do they think “play” means being as childish as possible?
These adults dress up similar to kids and then go play obvious child activities. I guess they’re not hurting anyone… but I can’t quite put my finger on why I feel so disgusted and why apart of me thinks I’m witnessing something morally wrong.
I believe the disgust response is an early indicator you’re witnessing something wrong before the rational mind catches up.
Thoughts?
