I'm not suggesting anyone should ever do this and I'm completely against it, but I do wonder what Nick would do if someone "joked" about his kids like this, went hunting for pictures of them etc. Would it be different when it was happening to his own children or is he such a fan of jokes about kids being sexually assaulted that he'd be fine with it?

A surprising amount of people Bob's age look like aged hippies, possibly because they are.
While Celeste clearly funds the majority of their current lifestyle, Bob worked at a great job for decades (Celeste only worked part of the time when Nick was growing up) and most likely has a good retirement income and/or shares himself.

Concerning the tweets currently in question (initially found here and here):
April twice over made the claim that their portrayal of events is less harmful to the children than what others would have to say (protective even), while also making the distinction that their version is "true" and everyone else is spewing "lies". April also includes Nick in whatever was communicated to the children.
One way to look at this is that Nick and April have directly explained to at least one of the children the the real reason why the woman who has slept in mommy and daddy's room for months was at their house, the role she played in the initial arrest, and why that shouldn't bother them.
Alternatively, she is implying that Nick and April have indirectly explained to the children the the real reason why the woman who has slept in mommy and daddy's room for months was at their house, the role she played in the initial arrest, and why that shouldn't bother them by blasting it on social media and hoping the children eventually find it there.
Either of the above would be desperate attempts at defending her misdeeds while feeding her need for public exposure as a righteous act. Much like Nick, April won't allow herself to take ownership of wrongdoing. Instead, April tries to shift the focus on everybody/nobody in particular by claiming that them and their non-specific "lies" are the real villains here. No. The probable cause statement for Aaron's arrest warrant states that all four of them were in a Signal group. Kayla shared nudes of herself. Nick confirmed it.
To me, that's the funniest part of Aaron's arrest, and not anything Aaron did. Nick willingly admitted in a government document his wife was sharing her nudes with somebody that's not him. He wants Aaron in prison that bad.
Coomalot claimed that Nick was sending images of Kayla around to others, but that's Coomalot. The truthfulness of what he says is debatable. I'm only going by the official record we have.

I think you misread the post. They're talking about Aaron sharing the images, not Nick. Aaron is facing charges for that. It's just badly worded.
We don't know who sent the nude image of Kayla to Aaron but we do know that the polycule had a private group for sharing stuff, so consent for sharing within that group could be implied.

This is why I don't feel very sorry for Kayla in terms of the charges against Aaron. While you can make the argument Aaron shouldn't have shared with Geno, Kayla... a married woman who is the mother of five children... shared such an image with a man not her husband.
It almost feels like karma biting them in the ass for their degeneracy. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Plenty of people who held corporate jobs during their working lifetime look like hippies/bikers in retirement. How they present now isn't related to how they presented during a time when standards of dress and grooming for a work environment were higher than they are today.

Remember this lying sack of garbage routinely calls people pedos for absolutely nothing, like his insane lies that the only reason anyone would want to see the bodycam evidence is somehow to perv on his kids, even though they'd almost certainly be blurred out in any public release (and in fact the records request came along with an offer to pay a rather steep price for doing exactly that).
