It really wouldn't have taken a 0-day or a violation of the constitution for the feds to catch Torswats in the absence of Dennis, as not only was Filion openly bragging about swatting himself on specific dates in public Telegram chats that the feds were confirmed to be lurking in, but he had also logged into a Discord account tied to one of his known aliases, without a VPN.

Think about what I was able to find on him, and then think about how much more I could have found if I had subpoena power. I'm frankly still astonished the feds hadn't arrested him sooner!

Pat's "annihilitation and reaction mass" sounds like standard antimatter engine handwavium. He read on Project Rho that a rocket needs reaction mass, and he read that antimatter is totally the best energy storage, so he put that in there to sound more like a Hard SciFi author than he really is.
I wouldn't give him too much shit for that since they're just kinda background decorations in his type of stories, but then the Pig in the Half Hovel proclaims himself to be a scientific authority and gives convention talks about rocket technology.

Well, even with Ross Ulbricht (Dread Pirate Roberts) there was a highly plausible explanation in that he'd made his first posts about what later became Silk Road under an account attached to his rossulbricht@gmail.com address, and then dumbly just didn't duck out and abort once he realized that.

While that's a plausible explanation there's a reasonable suspicion they actually got him some other way and then only after that found the earlier fuckup.

For instance, the Rolex watches rated for scuba diving are very specific about that, 100 meters to 300 meters (and some even more), and they are called waterPROOF because they're actually certified to that depth.

If this were true btw there is no reason they wouldn't have access to at least some if not all of the addresses he was receiving payments on. From that it is likely they could trace at least some part of the payments made and press charges against other people. Especially since he pled guilty, there would be no reason for him to not cooperate at that point.

The only reason I disagree with you that they even needed to do some "highly unconstitutional shit" is that he was 16 when he made most of the calls. Given the amount of money he was charging (like $50 per call) and their age and the fact they were uploading recordings of the calls they were making onto their telegram channel doesn't really speak to being a super sophisticated operation. The fact they went after a government representative also says a lot.

The only reason they didn't attract attention for so long seems to be because there is no central database in the US where the police and authorities share information. Once there started being news articles that mentioned the published recordings and other details they deleted their Telegram channel. It looks like once news of this shit started reaching mainstream sources it only took 6-7 months for them to arrest the kid that was doing it.

Obviously the government should've figured out this was one (or a small number of people) doing this persistently and investigated a lot earlier.

clearly shows that torswats was caught because he had extremely poor opsec, they didn't use any voodoo magic:

He was evidently using a VPN sometimes but also used both Discord and Google without a VPN leading them straight to his home because he was using his residential internet connection to access that shit. His Google and Discord accounts had recovery numbers that were his own phone number registered to himself/his family. Based on this I very much doubt they did anything that was unconstitutional to find evidence to arrest him. He was both doing "swat for hire" and his own personal vendetta swattings and he was sloppy and he got caught.

If you swim, there'll be much higher dynamic pressures, hence the typical dive watch being rated for 200 m. And personally I don't go swimming with anything rated less than that.
I don't remember what Fattie's Galaxy Fold had, but I don't think it was IPX8.
 
A quick look at the ratings and it was IPX8 for the Zfolds 3, 4 and 5. However the water resistance is only as good as the integrity of the seals. Piggy, drunk at the time, probably damaged the seal at the usb c port trying to jam in a charging cable with his hooves, or somehow otherwise compromised the case. Look at the shit condition his MS Surface is in. He's posted photos of it with those "I Voted" stickers, some of which he stole from Nikki.

Piggy's watch is a Festina f6847. Yes, the autism, but it is the only Festina open heart and he boasted about getting it while in Europe. Let's see, mineral glass crystal-- cheap in this day and age. Wait, 50m water resistance. You can shower in it, but maybe not go swimming. One of the Pests noted Piggy used to wear a Fossil automatic, or was it quartz? It's the watch seen on his pointy finger profile photo. Probably quartz and the battery died. Piggy doesn't know how to replace the battery. It's that Problem Solving course. He didn't do well in it, so solving the problem of a dead battery is beyond Piggy.

If they had backdoors into all his shit due to his shitty opsec, then they could trace hundreds of people who were paying him for illegal activities. The longer they kept him as an unwitting federal asset, the longer he'd lead them to all sorts of dodgy people and evidence for other investigations. If I was a fed and had some teenage retard openly accepting money to commit federal crimes for anyone with 50 bucks, I'd be licking my lips at the amount of free wins I'd get through his compromised systems. It would almost feel like a shame to finally snap the cuffs on him and I'd procrastinate as long as I'd be able to.

Remember when someone requested some kind of legal document relating to Pat (I can't remember the details) and it wasn't closed due to an "open FBI investigation". Pattycakes smugly intoned that this was the investigation into the Stalker Childs that would make them all Enjoy Prison, but I always suspected otherwise. The court documents don't even really mention much about him taking payments for stuff or the "proceeds of the criminal activity" whatsoever. So it looks like they just didn't care and saw the actual act of swatting at such a scale as the crime and didn't care that he was doing it as a paid service.

Which is pretty fucking retarded.

They do mention things like his emails containing account shit like coinpayments, coingate and crypo.com (all exchanges) so he obviously didn't have secret wallets set up and had very bad opsec. I don't think any of those exchanges probably even deal with shit like monero either. They could totally investigate who was paying him, but I think because it was like $50 a call they just don't give a shit. Presumably, paying for a swatting should be an attempted murder charge but maybe the law sees it differently.

i also agree 100% with @Spunt's theory about torswats as unwitting honeypot. law enforcement has no problem letting outrageously illegal (and morally abhorrent) shit run its course when it also serves some purpose for them. that other purpose can be all sorts of things, including providing them a bubbling fountainhead of patsies they can entrap into cooperation.

the feds move glacially slowly, so just because they haven't filed charges against the customer list yet doesn't mean it's not coming. on the other hand, if you're someone even tangentially related to something they're interested in, then you being on the torswats customer list provides them a card they can keep and play against you to apply pressure when it's useful.

On the other hand, if they were investigating all his clients, surely they would be very careful not to mention that in any public documents, giving his clientele warning that it's time to go swimming with their phones and leave the country. I don't think absence of evidence is necessarily evidence of absence.
 
I can imagine a (hypothetical) scenario where Jackie waves off Patrick's concerns about having to provide his KYC info for the Gemini account with "dude chill just say the stalkers stole your identity lol". I can also believe Patrick going along with it because he's a mark-ass buster.

it was a gemini account, not a coinbase account, and the first mention of the info came from the second, better forum-- you can search there to find it. iirc it came from a queasy period where various people were interacting with the torswats kid.

people were skeptical (rightly) of everything the torswats kid said.

It's not known if any payments were made from the account, just that an account was registered with Rick's e-mail address. It might not have gone through KYC verification.

I think if Rick directly transferred funds to torswats from the crypto exchange, he would be enjoying prison already. Likewise, the drowned Samsung was probably just him being a moron, not deliberately trying to hide digital traces by physically destroying the phone. But it's hard to know what to make of the situation, since everyone involved is retarded and unreliable.
