A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

  • She then asks if he will continue trade talks with the Trump administration - Starmer responds that he will "discuss issues of our economy" with the president-elect
  • Badenoch then moves on to last week's Budget, focusing on farmers and hitting out at the "cruel family farms tax". The PM says the Budget is about fixing the economy and plugging the "£22bn black hole"

I haven't heard many open reactions to the Trump election win this time around. In 2016 there was more of a widespread acknowledgement in the day-to-day. Not this time. Maybe people are just more indifferent to the idea of a Trump presidency the second time around? Or maybe I just don't know enough people unhinged enough to upload their sobbing, 15 minute rambling breakdown to their Facebook - why anyone does that is beyond me.

I did hear that Emily Maitlis had a small breakdown during the live election coverage on Channel 4. Swearing and eventually leaving the studio. I haven't managed to find any clips though so it may just be bunkum.

My expectation is that this will be the end of "wokeness": transgenderism, critical race theory, and so on (rainbows please). There'll no longer be the engine of America pumping it out, plus it's what Kemi is strong on. If they've any sense (lol), the new Government will avoid anything in this vein.

I'd bet that Lammy will be moved out of the way somehow. Maybe given a sinecure somewhere, or moved aside to fail at the Home Office.

I wouldn't be surprised if Farage leaves the UK to work for Trump, spelling the end of Reform UK and making it massively more likely the Conservatives will win next time. This isn't necessarily a good thing, as it could prevent them from confronting why they lost.

I expect the war in Ukraine to come to a halt, with the end result being the status quo ante bellum, but with Crimea formally ceded to Russia and Russian sanctions lifted. This would be the best outcome for both sides, though they're too stubborn to admit it.

I would be. The guy has wanted to be an MP his while life (look at how many elections he's stood in), and he literally just got his wish. He also gave a commitment to Reform voters that "if elected" he would stick around for five years. The specific number of years made me think he'll fuck off immediately after, but not before.

Not saying it's impossible, but I would be surprised.

I wouldn't be surprised at all, given he previously vowed he wouldn't be standing for Reform in the GE, and before that promised he wouldn't be starting another party after he left UKIP, and before that promised he wouldn't leave UKIP... the man says whatever will earn him a groat. The only question is whether he'll wait for Starmer to resign first.

It's purely virtue signalling. I've seen the same seething and depair on UK forums and IRL, when called out they mumble something about orange man fascist and don't have anything else to back it up.

For me this was a good few weeks of entertainment but my life will go on as normal and nothing will change. If the results of an election upset you to the point of posting videos of yourself crying, you deserve to be laughed at.

I find it hilarious there's a refugee charity in the UK. Refugees are people who seek shelter in a country near their own with the intent of returning once things stabilise in their home country. None of these cunts have any intention of fucking off and the current Government is so obsessed with licking migrant cock they've no intent of ever making them fuck off.

Trump being elected represents an existential thread to scum refugee NGOs. They know when Trump delivers on his promise of the largest deportation programme the USA has ever seen, it's only a matter of time until the UK takes notice and does the same.

It's this. People are realising that Trump being in power means nothing. No-one on either side is raging, seething, coping or sneeding. No-one is OTT celebrating, it's just calm relief.
The lack of energy and lack of rage directed at Trump means no-one is taking the bait and recognising the trannies or screeechers. Their hysterical voices now ignored in favour of the peace and quiet.

The world is healing. The insanity has past and clarity descends upon us once more.

Right?! None of these people are seeking refuge, they're seeking a comfier existence. Not that there's anything wrong with that desire, but no, western countries are under zero obligation to humor it.
