Well cartels seem to have been given the greenlight to start shooting at them when before that wasn't an option to them for obvious reasons. Likely another reason why Trump wants the military to help with the border.

The military will go after civilians if told to do so, however it will be up to the generals in charge. Many in the past claimed they wouldn't do so. The military can also now use lethal force against civilians when aiding the police however. Before it wasn't written that they were allowed to do so, but now it's been clarified as of last month that they can. This is for things like terrorism and what not though. Unlike what the Reactionary Right claim on Youtube who seem to think it's so that the government can help arrest normal law abiding citizens who disagree with the Left and a "clear sign of Communism!".

Publishers nowadays outright want (often require) you to pitch your book this way: [Book] is X franchise meets Y franchise with a dash of Z...
It's a way to instantly gauge whether a book would have a market. Now it's another thing entirely that Rick's drivel is nothing like any of the examples mentioned. Not just because his is shit while the examples aren't, but also because they deal with totally different topics and plots.

These are (unsurprisingly) AWFUL pitch emails. I am legitimately shocked he got anywhere with those.

The publisher never saw those. Those are to his agent Russell Galen (most noted as Phil Dick's agent). I'm sure Galen did a better job pitching them than Fatty did writing them.
