My 00 went back down to 4 and stopped, so back to 00 I went. Don't do it fellow autists its a trap its an extra chore every day. If you must just get regular piercings that can close up there are much cooler designs now than there was even 7 years ago. Also mouth piercings are an even bigger chore that will constantly be in a state between healed and healing even with proper cleaning.

Primer: I'm a dude. That being said, without TMI, I know what I'm talking about.

Piercing Guns:
As others above me have said, never get piercings at Claire's, or anywhere that uses a piercing gun. How they work is they literally jam the blunt end of the piercing through your skin, which is horrifically damaging and causes a lot of pain. Additionally, the piercing gun housings are single pieces of molded plastic, meaning that they cannot be disassembled and cleaned, which is why the infection rates are so high. Just go to a certified piercist and pay the $20-$40 for a good job that won't hurt you or infect you.

Materials:
1. please, please do not use acrylic. Acrylic is porous and therefore holds all kinds of funk, and over time, acrylic WILL break down into its constituent chemicals, which are inherently carcinogenic. This process is sped up with exposure to UV rays and heat.

2. Organics (wood, bone, etc) are really cool, but not all of them are body safe. There are certain woods that are too porous for long term wear or will leach harmful organic compounds into your skin. I'm not paid by them to be a shill or anything, but Omerica Organics makes high quality stuff made out of body safe organics.

3. Silicone is not inherently a good choice, either, and can cause a lot of irritation if you use low quality silicone. Look for certified "body safe silicone." I personally use and endorse Kaos Softwear.

4. Metals. Generally speaking, "surgical steel" is a meme, it's just stainless. Stainless steel is fine. Titanium is a high quality, excellent choice, however, there's an asterist there, which is the coatings. Titanium doesn't like being not titanium color, which is just silver, which means that the vast majority of alternative color titanium jewelry are just coated with a polymer that is that color, which defeats the purpose of using a non reactive, body safe metal. An excellent alternative is the more exotic (and a little more expensive) niobium. Niobium is an exotic metal used primarily in the aerospace industry for extreme heat and corrosion resistance, which is just a fun fact. It is as durable and corrosion resistant as titanium, with the added benefit that, like aluminum, it can be anodized into all kinds of different colors, blues, reds, purples, all kinds. Since it is anodized, it means that the niobium itself has taken on this color, so there is no flaking or fading of the color cost and no polymer to potentially leach nasty chemicals onto your skin.

Locations:
Holy shit, please do not get the "frog eyes" or "venom" or whatever they are calling it. It is extremely dangerous and can severely and potentially permanently damage the nerves in your tongue. The classic tongue piercing is fine, but specifically the ones at the very tips go through all kinds of nerves. Think about how sensitive the tip of your tongue is. Additionally, it pins the left and right sides of your tongue together, which promotes tearing in some cases.

As with other mouth piercings, just exercise caution, especially when considering a piercing that would have jewelry be in regular contact with your teeth. Over time, they can lead to serious tooth erosion, which is bad for obvious reasons.

Anyways, I'll stick around and answer any questions or whatever if you have them, or if you want to yell at me for some of my spicy takes that's fine, too, lmao. Please don't hesitate.

I've had piercings done with them on two occasions, and on both, they got infected. I had to let them close. One was the earlobe, and the other was the mid helix. Helix has a little bump, and I got my earlobes pierced again somewhere else without any issues.

Has anyone here done piercings on themselves?
Yes I can’t afford 50 dollars a lobe or any piercing so I just trial and error it, i used to have a friend do them for me. I’ve had several part of my face done at some point. I like face piercings. It’s not for everyone and that’s ok,

I used to have my nipples pierced. I don’t think I would recommend. I know some girls who have and maintain them fine, but mine hurt like a fucking bitch and after a year or so I gave up and let the holes close. They did so immediately upon removing the studs and I can’t even see the openings anymore. Almost as if my body was just waiting for my resignation.

Now I’m old and I just wear a single pair of normal-ass studs in my ears.

They didn't heal for a whole year? Is that normal for skin?
Cartilage takes aaaaaaaaaaagees and I seem to take even longer than normal (2+ years before fully healed)

I only have various ear piercings. I've never been game enough to have face ones done.

I had a tongue piercing for less than a day before I couldn't handle not being able to drink/eat normally and took it out.
I don't know how people handle multiple tongue piercings.

I'd like some more piercings, but my ears are so tiny. Also, I need to look for a good piercing place.

I wonder if I can get my mid helix done again, but the little bump worries me.

I don't like face and body piercings, and I especially despise nipple and genital piercings. It's just wrong.

Also, I don't recommend kissing someone with lip piercings. They hurt.

I unfortunatly had both my ear piercings done with a piercing gun, first was at a local jewelry shop and the second at Claire's. That second set burned like a bitch for a while after which was my first clue that those holes were going to give me trouble. They never really healed properly until I was suggested to get some small loops that I can wear all the time.
My septum piercing gave me virtually no issues, (other than people thinking I'm a lesbian) I got that from a fantastic piercer.
Absolute worst place to go would be Walmart. My best friend growing up got hers done there and kept having to have them re-done. I went with her once and I vividly recall her crying while blood ran down the side of her face.:'( I don't know what the fuck that employee was doing to my friend but it scared me off of piercings until high school when I got my first set of earrings done.

I was at one point offered a job at a piercing/tattoo shop but I'm actually glad it fell through in the end-
I had taken my friend in to get snakebites and the lady doing it was really nice and *seemed* to know her stuff. I must have made a good impression because she offered me a job at their front desk and maybe as an apprentice piercer. She later found that financially she wasn't going to be able to hire someone new, but at the same time my friend was now having a lot of trouble with his piercings bleeding. He had to get them redone at a different shop where he learned she had actually pierced him wrong. Digging around online he found some reviews where other people had issues when getting pierced by her. It sucks because her personality was great, but I wouldn't want to be trained by someone who was doing things wrong.

My earlobes healed in around 6 months to a year. My upper helix took like 2 years, and maybe a bit more. I hate when I accidentally knock it off when I'm brushing my hair, or my hair gets tangled in it.

This is not actually the case!

Titanium anodizes exactly the same way niobium does, and the color is very different from anodized aluminum. Titanium and niobium will look like they're different colors due to interference of light reflecting off the thin corrosion layer caused by anodizing and the surface of the metal below, like the colors you see in an oil film over water or a soap bubble. Aluminum oxides that form from anodizing are transparent, and the color comes from dying the anodized aluminum and then sealing it. Which is why you can get red and orange anodized aluminum (it's just dyed that color) and can't with anodized titanium and niobium (soap bubble color).

Thing is, you WILL find a ton of PVD coated titanium, probably because it's easier to produce consistently on scale in a factory. The colors you see will be the tip off. If you see only silver, gold and rose gold, it could be either. If you see black or 'rainbow' then those are definitely PVD coated. Red and orange will be coated as well. Buyer beware with PVD coated titanium as you may just be buying steel under a shiny, colored coating.

Niobium can be charred black, both matte and polished, and the color will wear the same as an anodized color. Over time the anodization will wear away, but it's not harmful and you can get it reanodized to back to the original color if you want.

If you want to be sure you're getting anodized titanium, either buy from your tattoo parlor (it's common to have the tools to do this now) or a place that offers it as a custom add on to your purchase.

I once took a break from wearing earrings and my holes closed absurdly fast. Decided to get my ears re-pierced for my birthday this year, and while they're regular old lobe piercings, I do like a lot of the different types and find them attractive on men. Always found ear gauges ugly though. I remember some kids in my high school made DIY gauges with cut-off pieces of drinking straws and, surprise surprise, one idiot ended up getting an infection.

I'd get a couple more but I'm not sure what kind, probably still on my ears.

Piercing Guns
Just as an additional thing to scare people off of these, they cause so much damage that, at least in the earlobe, the piercing hole can end up 'eating' the earring as a result of the inflammation from the severe trauma they inflict and require surgical removal afterwards
Silicone is not inherently a good choice, either, and can cause a lot of irritation if you use low quality silicone.
I assume this is for gauges. The most common irritant in silicone is nickel as I learned from trying to find a sport-band for my smart watch. It's really awful, I can't imagine trying to wear (cheap) silicone gauges, the watch bands make my skin peel in pretty short order so having that against an open wound would be the worst

E: Also, just rated @The Fair Lady 's post Horrifying for the drinking straw gauges and remembered the source of the sticker's artwork lmao

Inwas big into piercings when I was younger, even self pierced myself with surface hip piercings a few times. All I've got left now is one ear at 12mm (highest was about 28-30mm I think) and my two lip piercings.

Worst one I ever got was a septum. I wanted to be able to turn it up my nose and hide it in school, so I had them pierce the very back of the nose where the skin is toughest. Man, that was so fucking painful. I almost blacked out, I certainly lost vision for about ten seconds. I only kept it about six weeks aswell, what a waste.

I remember when I got my first lip piercing, the shock of it surprised me so much, my head jolted up a bit and I headbutted the lady in the tits, lol.

I’m not super into facial piercings but if I ever got one done it’d probably be the Medusa one. I remember really wanting snake bites as an edgy teenager (I also wanted black scene hair with neon green streaks in it lmao). I have a needle phobia though lol, the only piercings I have right now are my ears that got done with a Claire’s piercing gun when I was 12.

I hate needles aswell. With that in mind, getting my lip done at a hairdressers probably wasn't the brightest idea for 13yo me.

Honestly it's not that bad for lips, it's over quick and it's a sting, not a pain. I closed my eyes. I don't think I'd have the bollocks to get poked with one as an adult though. Luckily I've had them so long now, they don't close up even if I don't wear them for a year or two. Hurts a bit stretching them back out with a stud though!

I clicked this thread before any responses and can gladly announce the replies went exactly how I had predicted they would go. Like tattoos, so many people have piercings it isn't very special anymore. I've always found snake bites to be kinda cool.
Also what the fuck

Lol same. All I wanted when I turned 18 was snake bites.
This was my goal from like 14 to 18:

I was convinced that at 18 I was going to get these piercings, move to Odessa, and become a Suicide Girl.

The cringe flashbacks...it hurts 😬

When I mentioned my safety pins I was worried it would be super cringe in hindsight. I had to look up some pictures and while it wasn't as cool as I remembered I can at least breathe a sigh of relief that it wasn't so cringe as to be something that keeps me up at night lol. It's actually not that bad and even Johnny Depp has done it so I'll take it

I was also worried it might have some kind of meaning that's been ascribed to it over time and thankfully it's just kind of a generic mark of 'inclusion' and not something activists have completely ruined
