The thing that annoys me about the whole showing emotions debate is that what they're talking about isn't people expressing genuine concerns or feeling genuine, overwhelming emotion at great joy or great loss. They're specifically operating in the realm of histrionics. Inappropriate oversharing with strangers/acquaintances, not maturing past little details bothering you, etc. They also do not get that their crying fits are often a very female way of getting someone to let you off the hook. Most grown women will knock it off but a lot of us did it as teenagers. They think this can and should be applied to men, but most men don't want to cry to appear pitiful, and most people generally don't want to be vulnerable and share private matters that are bothering them with the whole world.

Part of being a level headed adult is knowing when to rein yourself in and make the right choice in the moment, not give into emotions. You can vent and deal with disappointments, frustrations, and all other negative emotions by using that energy in a productive way or just privately dealing with them by yourself and/or with close ones. These people only ever argue in favor of overblown, histrionics being a public performance. It's just as bad a thing as constantly bottling things up and not knowing what to do with yourself.
