The latest document from @MNPublicRecords confirms something that was obvious but flew under the radar. Dawn Weber and John Mueller, the Balldos attorneys in the Emergency Protective Care (EPC) proceeding were court appointed.

It's possible that the judge appointed them counsel and made the state pay for it regardless of their financial situation because judges can do whatever they want. But the code is black and white: the Balldos had no right to appointed counsel unless they qualified under the financial guidelines.

The order assigning them the attorneys is dated May 24. They were arrested on May 23 and arraigned and released the next day, so this would have been either when they were still in jail or just after being released.

Incidentally, I disagreed with @soy_king's opinion at the time, and still do. I don't think Rekieta entrapped Tonka. I think he gave Tonka a lot of rope, and the dumb injun hanged himself with it. It was rather masterful, and convinced a lot of people he might be a good lawyer. Even @soy_king changed his opinion later, IIRC.

While I generally agree, Nick's great win in Rittenhouse and Depp (to a lesser extent, other trials) was bringing in insightful and well-practiced lawyers who could comment on the happenings. Nick on his own wasn't that insightful, and only entertaining in cases when there were obvious jokes or charismatic witnesses (as in Depp). Trials are long, often are boring, and a panel is a good way to cut through the dead air. That most of them were only clout-chasing demons was irrelevant, the super berries went to Nick.

I agree. Two points that need to be highlighted here:

1. Nick has no actual intrinsic talent that allowed him to do what he did. He wasn't terribly insightful himself during any of his trial streams. He was just lucky in that he had a biggest channel, and other members of Lawtube were happy to join his panel shows for the exposure.

With that in mind, nearly any member of Lawtube can now do what he did and reap the financial and viewership benefits as he did.

2. He's only gotten worse since then. Way worse. To the point I think he would make most panels outright uncomfortable. They more likely want decent legal analysis that is educational in nature (occasional irreverence is fine).
