I think it's gonna be some intervention thing. That seems to be Stein's angle here. He called for an intervention earlier. I don't think Stein hates Nick.

I was taught to treat every gun as if it's loaded because they aren't toys.

To be fair, he did a pretty good job of keeping up the trad dad larp for a while. Not swearing, being uncomfortable with guests swearing, the "pray for my dying hamster" superchats he indulged, etc. He kept people like Ty and Doug TenNapel around to talk a big Christian game. It was only when he started saying wild stuff like "no one's without sin, not even Jesus" that I started scratching my head.
