The cops or Aaron/April planted the drugs for the cops to find. Or he was simply holding onto them for one of his friends. That is the best excuse I can think of, not too many more ways to swing it.

Yep and Nick wasn't into guns one bit like some of us gun autists. A lot of people don't seem to really get this. Like you said, it's probably because they've never dealt with a narc in their lives. All these people (even Jim) who believe that Nick was a good man who just went bad don't get that he was a narc the whole time. The ability to successfully charm and deceive are exactly how a narc is able to fool everyone, exploit people, and achieve their objectives. A lot of people who were charmed and deceived by Nick are still in denial about how wrong they were about who this guy is and was.

The only difference between younger Nick and current Nick is that the drugs, alcohol, and success-fueled hubris have made Nick sloppy. It's caused the mask that always existed to slip. Nick was always an exploitative charmer. Once he found mega success and a huge bump in fame, he gave into all of the dark impulses that had already been there. The good, trad dad illusion was always an illusion.
