I do I think he would have tried to spare his wife as well if he could. But they own the house, have kids and share the bedroom and seemingly the drugs.

He probably rationalizes it with the fact that the drugs were in a safe and the guns were also out of reach.
Thing is, if you are black-out drunk and on hard drugs all the time YOU can become a danger to the children, even if you believe you would never do that.
Also, the neglect is pretty obvious from the police report even if they were never endangered, that is fucking bad enough for two parents who are pretty much permanently at home.

There were drugs, guns and ammunition laying around haphazardly, Nick was driving his kids around Spicer under the influence. They were definitely endangered.
