Thats not the same as being paid to think about these things. Presumably scientists at NASA are paid to think about these things.

Actual Sci Fi authors with success and ongoing publishing contracts, one could say they are paid to speculate and imagine about these things, but not really to think about how such things would genuinely work.
No one would ask a script writer on Star Trek about gravitational effects of planets and soil nutrient qualities on Mars.

Exactly.

It's like a mark of a really good sci fi author is that whether or not the "science" and "facts" of their fictional universe would work in reality, they are still able to explain how their "science" or "facts" work to a reasonable degree of complexity and in universe logic.

Obviously having a background in a serious science really helps someone imagine such things, just like how a lot of sci fi and fantasy authors are history professors and the like. This gives them the capacity to imagine a fantasy society and how such a place could operate.

What Fatrick doesn't seem to grasp is that a lot of the best sci fi-fantasy authors are smart people with successful careers in deep fields of study, who write their novels in later life. Not that writing sci fi and fantasy grants them amazing insight into science and societies.

@FinnSven you just posted before me but I agree about the best sci fi/ fantasy authors knowing their subject matters well. A lot, and I mean a lot, of fantasy stories are based on crazy things that actually happened in history.

I hope it's not too much, because he clearly doesn't think. 10 seconds of Googling revealed that, if the Martian ice caps melted, a sphere the size of Mars would be drowned under 100ft. of water. Additionally, there are massive slabs of ice buried beneath the dirt and sand. Additionally, water is chemically bound to various minerals, and can be separated by heat. Finally, if you can rearrange atoms you have effectively an endless source of resources, since matter cannot be created or destroyed (no link because this is basic high school chemistry. Which Patrick flunked, now that I think of it.)

Well, probably the currently most famous example of that is A song of ice and fire.
It’s no secret that most of it is based on the wars of the roses and directly related slightly later historical figures.
Particularly the House of Tudor, Henry 8th, Elizabeth the First and Bloody Mary.

Fatrick could have been inspired by Henry the eighth when he threatened to kill his first wife and new born child (especially if she was a girl), but as this ultimately failed, he did the other famous acts of Henry the Eighth by becoming disgustingly and offensively fat.
 
Arthor C. Clark thought about satellite communication system using geostationary orbits. Kim Stanley Robinson had some good ideas on ecological sustainability, and had a PhD in English. PKD's Roog is better than anything Patrick has written. Although much like with Patrick I would not want to be in the same vehicle as him.

Now that I think about it, could Fatrick be what the HAARP program was really about? Not to create an earthquake-generating device but to contain the gravity waves emanating from him and saving the world.

perchlorates are pretty toxic to plants and people alike, mainly because when they're ingested, the metabolic system mistakes them for the essential nutrient iodine, but they're much more destructive than iodine is due to being more powerful oxidisers
on the plus side, the natural occurrence of perchlorates in Martian soil means it'll be a very rich source of material for making fireworks and explosives
