Everytime someone sends me something from Japan (typically it's like news footage or pro wrassling botches) the footage always looks like it's come straight out of the 1980's.

What's the deal with that? Is Japan based and realizes that 4K is a nigger technology so doesn't bother with it for television and stuff or is there something else I'm unaware of going on here?

But their stock market tells an even clearer story.
They haven't yet recovered from their late 80s early 90s stagnation:

They had high definition before we did.

As early as the late 80s they had 1080i analog broadcasts and televisions that could receive them, and VCRs that could record them.

We didn't even get 480P televisions until the mid 90s, they weren't popular, and they could directly receive only a standard definition broadcast anyway. All they were good for was viewing progressive-scan DVDs and perhaps to get the absolute best picture quality out of your DirecTV subscription hacked access card. It wasn't until the late 90s or realistically the early 2000s before we started seeing 720p plasma TVs and 1080i capable CRT rear projection sets, along with digital cable services that offered a couple hundred channels of severely macroblocked 1080i video. It wasn't until a few years later you could actually receive HD content over the air, and years later still before 1080P LCD TVs of good quality became commonplace. And I still know someone who has a cable box that puts out 1080i only, in the current year of 2024. The picture quality on their 720p TV connected via HDMI is absolutely horrendous.

Fax machines and cellphones that aren't "smartphones" may still be used too. I think the idea that Japan is technologically more developed is a Western misconception.

Wow. That's crazy!

Why does everything I see from Japan look like it's from the 80's, tho?

Bro, we have 8k TV Broadcasts. Wtf you talking about?
I'm just saying, every time someone sends me a video from japan the shit looks all hazy and low resolution and shit.

The latest botchamania is what prompted me to wonder about this
I did a quick search and got this news report, and it's admittedly higher quality than I'm used to seeing, but I also think it might be because it's based on US political shit. But it still looks lower quality than even my local TV broadcasts (admittedly out of Chicago)

It doesn't look *bad*, it looks different. Like shit I remember from when I was a kid. I like it more tbqh, but then again I think 4k is a nigger technology so I might be biased.

TBS has always been kinda shit in terms of broadcast quality.

But the weird thing is, the in-studio cameras look nice as hell. Especially with the satellite broadcasts at 4K. Idk why, but the online versions of Japanese TV news look degraded. Looks fine on TV here tho, it’s proper HD.

It’s just the news channels not uploading it properly.

The first one has bad camera focus and was definitely upscaled. Both of them look like they've been deinterlaced.
