I've seen 2018 three times and I didn't see much in the way of current year bullshit other than it's 3 generations of women fighting Myers. And if that's "woke" then we must revaluate every single slasher or horror film where there's a final girl confronting the big bad.
I get what you mean about RZ's movies but here's my argument:
(1) How is this worse than in parts 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 where he must kill his sister and/or family members because reasons? Ignoring all the bullshit in part 6, how does this not demystify Myers but the RZ movies are somehow a betrayal? I would argue that RZ made the connection between Michael and Lori stronger thus giving him more of a reason to be obsessed with her. And I like the whole inherited mental illness bit in his Halloween 2.
(2) We don't really watch slashers for the story with some exceptions. I don't think there is much in the way of a story in almost all of the Halloween movies. Especially in the original: little boy kills his sister for no reason, locked up in an asylum until he escapes and kills a bunch of random teenagers. Friday the 13th is just a bunch of camp counselors are knocked off because of a vengeful mother (obviously the motivation and lore behind Mrs. Voorhees rampage is great). Nightmare on Elm Street has more of a story going on but you know what I mean?
I am weighing this film and the RZ movies on an immense slasher scaled compared to every single slasher I have seen. I am comparing this shit to the highest of highs (I.E. The Burning, My Bloody Valentine uncut, Friday the 13th part 4, Nightmare in a Damaged Brain, Lake Nowhere and not even mentioning the Giallo's which are kind of their own thing but definitely a part of the Slasher genre) to the lowest of lows (Evil Laugh, Berserker). I compare the RZ movies to the higher end of the spectrum but a few notches below par, settling in around the likes of The Dorm that Dripped Blood or Hospital Massacre: fucked up, flawed but dark and interesting.
