Tomb Raider Anniversary_2021.10.01-17.51.png
Beat TR: Anniversary. Yep, I can definitely see the hype for the (classic) series now. There's a moment toward the end that solidified the awesomeness of classic Lara for me:
When Lara killed Larsen and the rest of Natla's goons in the Lost City. She didn't like doing it, but in the end, she acknowledges that it needed to be done, because, just like her, they won't quit until they achieve what they desire. Larsen even outright says that she wouldn't dare kill him, because she's not that type of person. Lara's response? "I'm not who you think I am." BAM! BOOM! PSHEW! And Larsen's dead. Again, a perfect example of how you do a "strong female character" correctly.
Consider me a newly-anointed fan of Lara's classic exploits now! Now that the series is on my radar, a quick question. Which out of the classic TRs is the best? From what I've heard, general consensus is it's The Last Revelation. Or is general consensus incorrect? And should I play the other two in the Legend trilogy as well? I'd appreciate your thoughts on this.

Also, here's some Lara cheesecake because HOT DAMN:

Limitations of technical possibilities ( no photo-realism) gets you a solid art design which encompasses everything. It stands the test of time. Well it should at least, lots of games try but fail.
I don’t like the new tomb raider ones much and I played the rise of the tomb raider quite a bit. Up until you get thrown in an ice river the world I played felt as one. A cohesive well made part. After that it went bonkers and ended in a fucking Castle, because it has to.
A bit late and a minor detour, but you reminded me of Nexus: The Jupiter Incident. One of the best-looking space games I've ever seen simply because the Devs knew how to milk DX9. Its astounding how good its held up even today.
For a game that first came out in 2004 its held up remarkably well.

Well, I think you've convinced me to play it for the uh.... plot. Yes. The plot...

think I stopped after 2 or 3, from what I remember back then they got worse over time culminating with angel of darkness. there's a lingering thought I should got back and play AoD at least once to see how bad it really is, but my backlog is already big enough.

And should I play the other two in the Legend trilogy as well? I'd appreciate your thoughts on this.
if you liked anniversary definitely, but it is a departure from "classic lara" to some degree, but since you already started with anniversary it should be easier to get into.

if you can stomach it you can always start with 2 and go from there till you get to legend.

I remember when the nude patch for the og tomb raider was hot shit (and that was long before the internet was mainstream), and classic lara had plenty of outfits, core design was smart enough to dress her for the occasion instead of having her run around with shorts and tank top 24/7 (the wetsuit from tr2 made some great marketing material if you know what I mean, and next to the dress is probably the most well-known alternate outfit)

Coldass take, but old Lara was a strong woman, a badass as cool as any man, who didn't need a man. But she had big boobs, which is a sin and girls should be ashamed if they have those. NuWokeRolemodelLara is weepy and cries and is victimized and needs help all the time, but she wears pants which is what defines strength. Um, hm, OK.

I dont really care about the boobs. But I wish new Lara was a cool badass. Also, someone can be sexy and still strong/respectable/cool. Males heroes are constantly shirtless with six pack abs and amazing pecs.

Decided to fuck around with TRAE
Honestly, as much as I was hyped for it being leaked, I can't help but feel it looks more cartoony comparing to Anniversary?
TRAE:

Anniversary:

TRAE had less bugdet and was meant for PSP so blocky geometry is noticeable (and Legend-looking Lara was the executive meddling), but it had more faithful level design. The lighting is very pretty, but I think it's way too colorful and Anniversary felt more realistic and authentic to the original game. You can watch more detailed comparison here:
I'm glad I tried this and it's a damn shame there were so much behind-the-scenes issues. I think Anniversary was a better choice overall, but it does suffer from cut content and collision bugs.
IMO the best option to enjoy the original 1996 game is Tomb Raider ATI plus custom texture packs.

There're rumours about another Remake with Reboot Lara in the works, but considering Squeenix's idea for 25th Anniversary was a cooking book and switch ports for Lara Croft duology, I'm not holding my breath.

I really like Anniversary, but it's always felt like Legend's little sister to me. The condensing and combining of levels is downright sacrilegious for anyone who played the original game, and while the Legend-style gameplay is fun and sets it apart it's just not old school Tomb Raider. Thankfully the remake happened in 2007 (though even then big boobies were considered tools of the patriarchy); a Current Year remake would be levels of awful we can't possibly imagine.

Still wish they had done a TR 2 Anniversary. That one was my favorite.

sorry for double posting, but the reboot trilogy is currently FREE on Epic
The last game of Epic Christmas Giveaway are the Tomb Raider Reboot Trilogy:

So based on the 25th annivesary merch and concept arts, we can speculate this might be Lara's new look since Camilla left the franchise.

This statue in particular created an outrage started by a popular twitch thot Melonie Mac, who claims this looks like a teenage boy (it's just a promo statue for TR live):

I dunno, I actually quite like the new model and I do hope she looks like this in a new game. Still better than Shadow's garbage designs:

^WHY is she wearing underpants??

I can't believe I spent years hating on rebooters, only to turn agaist the classic stans when we're clearly winning? My only concern is this new classic design we'll be wasted on a shitty mobile game again.

Not really. Both designs are about the same in terms of shittiness.

Yes, the face is very masculine.
Very much so. Lara has never had a manjaw that prominent. And her face is too square and angular.

I went and played the first nu Raider game for the first time. I played all of the original games when they came out but haven't touched anything Tomb Raider related since the PS2 era.

The game was alright, looked really good and the gameplay was solid but it didn't feel like a TR game? Felt like I was going on rails the whole time, there were no real puzzles to speak of and it just felt like a generic action game. The character stuff was really fucking bad, especially Lara's friends. Any time there was a cutscene with them it was incredibly cringe and it made what little story there was worse for it.

Also holy shit she get the hell beat out of her. Like damn, if that was real life she would need hospitalisation after the first 10 minutes. I suspect one of the devs has a sadism fetish or something.

That's just your typical modern female vidya character. If she isn't underaged/ugly/both and getting the shit beaten out of her, then it's not "progressive".

my biggest gripe with tomb raider 2013 is how they removed the platforming. Literally the core gameplay of the franchise, and they replaced that with QTEs.

Speaking off, this was a paid DLC. Imagine paying for a potato sack

iirc all the outfits were dlc, which is one of the reasons 2013 is so retarded. "watch lara have a realistic struggle and react to her environment" - while running around in a fucking tank top the whole time. "I'm so cold", bitch just grab a jacked off a dead dude before you literally freeze to death. yes, I know it's supposed to be a game, but if you actually have that shit behind a pay wall and make thermodynamics part of the plot, I just want to slap anyone involved with that shitshow.

try rise next if you got time to spare, enjoyed it more than 2013 (although I preferred the mystic backdrop of 2013). the vr parts are also properly spoopy.
haven't tried shadow since it's apparently worse than 2013 trying to go full sony movie game.

either play Rise or Shadow, but not both 'cause you'll get sick re-learning the same skills. The core gameplay is the same as TR2013, just sexier graphics and more outfits and bear asses to loot. Shadow wouldn't have been so bad if it wasn't for unskippable cutscenes and shoehorned RPG elements that are completely pointless. If you want an open world RPG, play literally anything else, they didn't even have enough budget for actual "diverse" NPCs 'cause all money went to Lara's wig. They got villages populated by clones and identical children.

Anyway the Netflix anime will have two seasons:
