The laughable reality of the crisis was 20 or so stations were going to get deliveries a day late. That was it. 20 stations in the South of England were going to get deliveries Weds/Thurs instead of Mon/Tues.

That snowballed into everyone going and topping up their cars and generally causing stations to run dry, and a whole week of madness followed suit to the point the UK's road based equivalent of a "Merchant Navy" had to be called upon to solve it.

Oh, and all the supermarkets are tempting in drivers with £5,000+ ($6,702 USD/ $8,556 CAD) sign up bonuses.

Truckers and logistics in general continue to be the lifeblood of most economies and quite a few places have treated them like utter dogshit for a while to the point lots are retiring and there's no new "Knights of the Road" coming forward globally.

In the UK it was estimated we're about 100,000 drivers short for what'd be "ideal" for a just in time economy, which has lead a lot of companies investing in massive warehouses in order to reinforce their supply lines.

It's also why there's a suddenly renewed interest in railfreight and how best to get the bulk or parcels and other things to hubs by rail as people's attitudes to that work has changed, most want to go home at night to their family/loved ones and have more of a set area to operate in, versus the present free-for-all a lot of long distance truckers suffer from.

Stories about driver shortages are bullshit. When the media does some logistics related story they go to the trade organization ran by the corporate carriers and they get their version of events. They always say that it is due to lack of drivers. It isn't. It is because they underbid the jobs, have poor dispatching, and other organizational issues. Who wants to work with that? So retention is shit because they treat their drivers like garbage and pay them peanuts.

Then, when the media comes sniffing around, they break out the crocodile tears about how nobody wants to be a driver. They absolutely do. Just not for them. Because they are trash.

It's like McDonalds saying they can't find people to work in their restaurants. People will absolutely do that job if you pay them well and treat them right. Don't be a cheap fuck and straighten out management and you will fill the positions.

When I lived in Ottawa, there were people afraid to walk through 100m of darkened woods in a public park. They'd turn their phone lights on and huddle together like scared children. Coming from small-town Canada it was mind-blowing how cowardly and soft they were. Some days in the winter I'd be the only person outside walking around in - 35C weather in my cheap shit winter gear while they stayed in with their $500 skiing jackets hung up by the door.

These are not people to be taken seriously. They're almost comically inept.

If this was some sort of war, and the left sees things as "a war for the soul", by this point we should hear of truckers trying to set their own rules and laws sine Trudeau fucked off while Justin continues to claim he's still the real man in charge of the government or he's running a "government in exile".
 
Well either the Libs haven't gotten their updated talking points yet or are really determined to double down. The Transport Minister indicated they plan on rolling out the mandate requirements for inter-provincial trucking next (blurb buried in the article, was originally discussed on radio), because why not cut off our nose to spite our face?

Trucking firms can easily rotate personnel to avoid the border, but mandating this crap for domestic transport doesn't have a similar fix when 10-15% of the total workforce isn't vaccinated. Kind of hope they actually try though, the resulting honks will be something to behold :story:
 
I know I hate noise pollution as much as the average person, but in this case it's for a good cause and it isn't really hurting anyone. Better truck horns than glass shattering and gunfire.

As for OMG pollution and/or fuel waste - I will believe that either of those things is an actual global fear when cruise ships are outlawed.

Hell. I'm a britfag, and we have a foodbank run by Muslims locally. No income, no proof of residence, no paperwork needed. Call them and within 24 hours you will have enough groceries for 4 days,plus toiletries plus meals cooked by the local Mosque, for up to 4 people, delivered to your fucking door.

You also need ID and proof of residence to vote in provincial, federal and municipal elections.

Food banks in Canada generally have you order the food by phone and pick it up in your car. They generally exist for housed poor people, while homeless shelters service the destitute. Reddit thinks truckers are rich people and that they have no right to shelters or know nothing about food shelters.

Think about the cold-starts! Sadly most of the trucks are too new to do a proper block-covering haze of white smoke. Maybe somebody there has an old Kelowna-built Western Star to do it properly. The locals would shit bricks.
