I have a lot of hope in this one. The air around it is electric. It brings joy to everyone who supports it, which I must add, is a large % of people up here. Hell, even /pol/ has taken a break from being nothing but bots & feds as actual people have come back to post. It's gone back to being giddy in a way I haven't seen since 2016. My only fear is that something (staged or otherwise) will happen & the resulting crackdown will leave us worse than ever before.

This is SOP in managing optics. During the last big lockdown protests here the protesters were herded into the shrine of remembrance (our main war memorial) and weren't allowed to leave by the cops. Cue the media telling the story of how the dirty anti vaxxers were desecrating the sacred shrine, with some of them having to piss because they'd been blocked from leaving for hours. The horror!

The police were so respectful of the holy place that they shot demonstrators in the back with rubber bullets when they eventually did allow them to leave because, you know, needless violence pays homage to our war dead.

Anyway it's an effective tactic against the right because we have morals and standards and they don't. You can't make a shameless, filthy communist feel guilt, it's impossible.

Can confirm, I moved to a Vancouver-adjacent bughive once and I turned into an A&N regular.
 
I have heavy doubts the story is true. Most long haul truckers carry food, portable grills, and other cooking supplies with them. If it did happen it's most likely the already barred homeless trying to get into the shelter some other way. Most Ottawa homeless are scum and deserve what they get.

Fair. It's why I know major Canadian cities and how they operate including PEI, BC, Ontario and Quebec, three of which with the highest homeless population.

You'll note their breakfast and dinner is only open to Shelter clients. They provide a lunch for everyone and plan to produce around 409 meals everyday to serve their local community. This is pretty much standard for most major Canadian cities.

A shelter is not a HOSTEL. You will be known by name to the shelter and expected to participate in finding permanent housing, however that will be.
