Portugal IS a safe country no matter how much coping and sneeding or how much of a shithole it is, You can look at any and all trends, statistics and a lot of info that proves that Portugal is one of the safest places to vacation to and especially to live. Also Lisbon is responsible for about 80% of the countries crime with Amadora by itself corresponding to about 60 to 70%.

As far as Lisbon itself is concerned, that place is safe as can be in comparison to other large European cities. In Barcelona, for example, I saw a lady (I think an American) get smothered by a crowd of Gypsies who took her bags, all of her personal shit in her pockets and such, and left her half naked in the middle of Plaza Real, in the middle of the day. There were people everywhere, it's not like this was in a dark alley or something.

Never saw anything like that anywhere in Portugal.

Barcelona, especially in the summer, is full of gypsies. They work in groups that usually include small children who will also beg inside restaurants for money.

Another tactic is having gypsy women in pairs flirt/make eye contact with someone and then pick pocket them while doing so. They usually do this to drunk tourists as they're an easy mark and less likely to notice right away that all their shit is missing. Given the placement of contusions and the odd abrasions, factoring in an orbital fracture, it is entirely possible he was rendered unconscious by a sudden blow and promptly hit the concrete, but I think it is really likely that someone or someones continued to work his face over if that happened.

If there is one thing doing stints in freestanding emergency departments has taught me about violence, is that if there was a meaningful struggle, there are going to be defensive wounds. If Ralph was tagging his opponents or trying to minimize damage to his face by guarding it, his hands and arms would undoubtedly tell the story.
