I wasn't going to watch the CGI show, but I typically trust the farms and you guys have peaked my interest.

Maybe I'll give it a look.

I am definitely not watching Part 2 of Revelations. Fuck that noise.
I have seen a bit on Twitter that the kid show respects the source material more than the Smith one, for what it’s worth.

Late, but I watched it, and- Le gasp! The He-Man show without the pandering and makes most of the characters likable with some honestly nice moments, is good. Very good even. I would recommend you watch it. I am deeply pleased as someone who watched it a lot as a kid (but was released way before my time).

The reboot definitely feels like something in the vein of the many Transformers reboots, particularly Transformers: Animated. Rather than attacking the source material, it looks at how to refine prior mythos concepts and execute completely new things by putting familiar characters in new situations.

It has numerous little references that only lore junkies are going to get. There’s even references to the original minicomics! It’s definitely the polar opposite of NuSheRa and I would love to see the same studio tackle She-Ra in a spin-off.

Man the kiddy version of He man literally BTFO the super serious and with more budget version lmao how is this possible

NGL the Reboot art kind of reminds me of Miraculous.

Don't fucking look at me Miraculous is sort of good sometimes. Cat Noir is a fun dude with a good character bit even if it is nothing new.

I saw someone on Twitter speculate that because they were making something for kids, they focused more on pushing a story rather than an agenda like the Smith version.

Oh yeah I just watched the whole season it's pretty good. The action is neato and the characters are set up and well defined with none of them being overtly overbearing. The show like revelations also ends on a cliffhanger but overall its a genuinely fun time.

And the reimagined villain designs are neato too. (spoilers!)

Damn the animation is not bad, very dynamic and they had fun with the designs. My memory might be failing me, but I remember the trailer looking much worse

Admittedly those scenes are from the latter half of the season where the show really goes ham on the action and overall animation quality. Of course, these are the same studios that did the CGI of Clone Wars so fast-paced action isn't new for them. I wouldn't blame you for shitting on the trailer cuz I was the same when I watched it with its obnoxious Hip Hop and the dissonant Sci-fi aesthetic.

Your clown avatar is kind of a dead giveaway for the taste of an awful cartoon.

That’s strange, considering all the other times we’ve seen kid shows try to push agendas. I think it’s more likely that the people they hired simply weren’t interested in pushing an agenda, but in making a functioning product.

But the reboot does have a more 90s diversity team thing going on. Cringer is disabled and a trafficking survivor who gets empowered by friendship, Teela is a properly paranoid black girl who grew up in the lower districts only to have phenomenal cosmic power forcibly thrust into her hands, Adam is a secret prince who learns from experience what the other classes live like, etc. This is how you do diversity right!

I just got done watching the CGI show. I'll give my more indepth thoughts later but its not a fiasco! Actually, its pretty good!

What the show got right over Revelations: The story is about He-Man and Skeletor's rivalry and lets them take center stage. That feels more authentic to Masters of the Universe than whatever the hell it was Kevin Smith pulled with his version.

Its also a perfectly enjoyable show for kids that reminded me of something akin to Beast Wars.

I went into this one with super low expectations and as a MOTU lifer, my eye is more critical than most, and I was pleasantly surprised.

I’m reading reviews on youtube. I don’t understand people saying that the reboot is bad or He-Man in name only because it’s too different from the 80s or 2000s versions. Earlier this year I binged watched most of the Transformers cartoons just to compare them, and I have to say that the new He-Man reboot really isn’t much more different from its predecessors than the Transformers reboots. The design team clearly took the time to study the source material, which is more than I can say for NuShe-Ra or Revelations.

Making Duncan and Teela the same age and unconnected isn’t any more extreme than 2007 Transformers: Animated making Blackarachnia an alter-ego of Elita or Jetstorm into Jetfire’s twin. Teela is still connected to Eldress, and Duncan is even the apprentice of the former man-at-arms.

I’m glad the new designers did something different. It doesn’t ruin the old show. And I’m sure in the future another reboot will come along that tries to more closely emulate the 80s/00s cartoons. Just like Transformers.

Like most people here, just got done watching the reboot. I was really surprised how good it was. Its nothing amazing, but I got to give credit for making me give a shit about the characters despite Smith's version killing all the shits I give about He-man and a short 10 episode run.

I specifically like that its clear that none of the kids have a good grasp on what they are doing and routinely get their shit kicked in. The animation and re-designs are actually alright, except for ram-mam. Holy shit her head looks incredibly bloated and unnerving when she has the helmet on (which is 95% of the time) and her master form looks like she has fucking giant head syndrome. If anyone needs to be touched up and redesigned, its her.

The animation and designs really remind me of those old LOL animated trailer type videos Riot put out after league got big. Which is not a bad thing because those still hold up to this day.

Overall, its a above par cartoon when compared to 90's classics, which makes it better than 98% of all animated kids shows produced today.

Dark-skinned blondes are oddly popular in anime and connected media. Of course, usually the tone is more “deep tan” rather than black, and they’re likely not of negroid physiognomy.
Actual negros in manga and anime is still very uncommon through those from everywhere but the U.S.A. are looked upon more favorably than the American variety.

I'll give my more in depth impressions.

First, the negative:

  1. The Theme Song for the intro sucks. Just genertic garbage.
  2. It leaned more into a cyber punk type of look rather than what I typically prefer from Masters which is Conan the Barbarian meets Flash Gordon, with more of a slant towards Conan. Still, its closer to the mark than the New Adventures of He-Man was, so I'll let it pass.
  3. Man-At-Arms never clicked with me at all. This is an example of me being too close to the original, but I can't see him as anything other than Teela's dad, and the age change and personality change was just jarring to me. If they had put Clamp Champ in his spot, it would have been less jarring to me. Anybody else think his powered up form looked a lot like Samus? His personality was also off to me because he felt like dollar store Sokka, and I found him kind of annoying. Also, please dear God almighty do not do a love story between Duncan and Teela. I AM BEGGING YOU!
  4. This is a problem with modern media, especially stuff aimed at kids, but there were jokes that were forced into situations where there didn't need to be a joke. Perfect example, when Adam becomes He-Man inside Castle Grayskull, he says something like "By the Power of this Castle's Name" and it was a bad joke that undercut what should have been something awe-inspiring.
  5. Obvious stuff like race-swapping Teela for no reason, and gender swapping Ram Man (who could have easily been called Crash Woman or something and I'd have had an easier time accepting her as a new character. Also, Orko being a robot is an odd choice as well (though he ended up being kind of cute, so I let it pass).
  6. Some rushed character development like Ram M'aam leaving the team for no reason or Teela inexplicably choosing to ignore the Masters powerup when offered in her second battle. Even early on, the face turns for Teela and Duncan felt a little rushed.

Now onto the good stuff:

  1. We get He-Man. Lots and lots of He-Man, and he's heroic and saves people, and is inspiring, the way He-Man should be. Anyone mad over his treatment in Revelations should watch this show as a pallet cleanser.
  2. I was a little put off by Cringer being the wise mentor character of the group, but I really warmed up to him by the end and he became my favorite of the good guy team.
  3. Teela is not obnoxious and horrible in this, which is an obvious step up from her treatment in Revelations. Ram M'aam, stupid name aside, is also not an annoying diveristy hire piece of perfection. Actually, being a younger crew, the characters struggle alot in this and no mission seemed like a cake walk, which was nice to see.
  4. Castle Grayskull and especially Snake Mountain look fantastic. I really latched onto the Snake Mountain design.
  5. The villains are great. Skeletor turning into a cackling mad man is always fun and he is a blast. He was a good balance of crazy fun and legit threatening. It was also nice to see Evil Lyn go back to her backstabbing ways of the classic series. The insane Beast Man and thuggish yet smart Trap Jaw were also welcomed updates. The villain designs also faired the best in the series. I actually kind of like the classic monster thing they had going with the henchmen (Evil Lyn = Dracula, Trap Jaw = Frankenstein Monster, and Beast Man = Wolfman).
  6. The backstory given to Adam and Keldor was actually pretty neat and seeing Adam as a kid with the sword kind of reminded me of the original Thundercats with Lion-O.
  7. They managed to have a believable rift between Randor and Adam without making either one into an asshole.
  8. The action in places was great, and then in other places became sensory overload with too much happening at once. Still, they put more effort into this than I expected.
  9. They kept hollow references to the old media to a minimum. They made a few references here and there but it wasn't just a full on Member Berries fest. I like the past as much as anybody, but you have to carve your own path too and it was nice to see this show kind of stick to its guns and find its own identity. Beast Wars also did a good job with this back in the day.
  10. The team of good guys had kind of a Big Hero 6 thing going, which was kind of neat.
  11. Love the cliffhanger! Made me want to see Season 2. It is similar to how Revelations ended, but felt way more earned since Skeletor was a consistant presence throughout the story.

So yeah, I enjoyed it! Way more than I ever thought I would. I think I would have enjoyed it more if maybe that had taken the approach of making these characters decendants of the classics like 2000 years into Eternia's history or something. Take that angle and the changes become more acceptable. But in any case, this was a nice taste of something different from the brand that was fun, good for kids, and isn't a total disrespect of what came before (Hi Kevin).

A bit of a sperg related to this:
Tan characters with blonde or white hair being called negro or "black coded" is particularly funny to me, since A) most Japanese creators don't think about the intricacies of race/what foreigners think about it when drafting up designs that appeal to them and other Japs first and foremost, and B) a lot of these people forget that East Asians, fuck it, Asians as a whole aren't exclusively yellow and think any tan or brownness has to be spic or negro-influenced and not Japanese/Asian period at all. If these people ever went to Okinawa or most countries in Southeast Asia, their eyes would explode, but that's like expecting niggers calling themselves kangs and pharaohs to actually visit Egypt.

That's the first time I've ever heard of Skeletor's lackeys based on classic horror monsters. Can you explain that to me real quick?

Unfortunately from what I've seen Americans both white guilt complex whiteys and negros been niggerifying Egypt and North Africa past and present since at least the 90ies. Which is aggravating for me as history and mythologies have been my jam for as long as I can remember.

When Skeletor endowed his minions with Havoc (the evil power that transformed Keldor into Skeletor), they underwent transformations into forms resembling their classic selves.

However, as they were transforming, the displayed traits similar to the classic monsters. For example, Evil Lyn got like an obvious bat theme that harkened back to Dracula, and Beast Man's transformation looked like THe Wolf Man. And Kronis starting out as a thug and then becoming a big mechanical monstrosity kind of reminded me of The Frankenstein Monster.

I don't know how intentional this was, but its what I got out of it.
