I think the first animu I saw was the first episodes of Pokemon.

I was exposed to the anime style before then through vidya like Mario or Zelda, but I didn't recognize the style as such until anime really took off in North America (around the early 00s). At first I thought they were some kind of Disney-like style, and I think Pokemon was the same way. I doubt I even knew the likes of Mario or Zelda were Japanese at first.

At the time I didn't distinguish between anime and animation, as I was a young kid, so in retrospect it was Voltron. The original Go Lion, not the fairly recent one plagued with crazies. My first actually-knew-it-was animes were Dragon Ball Z and Pokemon.

my first anime was either this:
729605

or this:
729606

and i’m not sure if elementary aged me should’ve been watching yumeria lol

Pretty sure it was Tenchi Muyo on toonami, so it was kind of surreal seeing the OVA being aired on Adult Swim some years later with more blatant sexual tension/cursing.
I'm sure it was. Why they had it on Toonami to start with will always be a question or me. I just think they needed extra episodes to go with the later TV stuff.

Some space anime that had uncensored tits when I was like 7 watching tapes from "Hollywood Video Going out of business sale."

Pokemon was my first anime and my first JRPG. Definitely opened the floodgates. Being a kid in the 90s had its perks I suppose.

For a country never included in the go-to EU translation list; english, german, french, italian, russian, sometimes swedish, we sure as hell got some solid dubs. Tons of 'big' actors as well, as opposed to whatever amateur scraps they find in current-day american cartoons. I'd like to think it was Pokemon. Every Sunday 8 am, had kids out of their bed in an instant.

Actual anime of my own volition, probably one of those big go-to movies. The one with the deaf girl I think. It spoiled me immensely because I expected all those shallow Slice of Life girl series to actually have depth after watching it. Sure, some did, but the majority is just treading water with sugoi moe shit. The few that do deal in pain and psychological shit just use it as a crutch. Want an Oscar? Black history. Want a +8 anime rating? Kill the main character ('s girl).

Naruto, watched it on Toonami back in 2007 when I was 12.

My sister and I watched all the Studio Ghibli films when I 4-7 and the occasional Dragonball Z episode here and there, but the first anime I sat down and watched was then I was 15, being Sword Art Online

Pretty sure it was Speed Racer back when Cartoon Network used to air it. Used to watch it with my dad.

My first anime once I actually knew what anime was I think was the first Vampire Hunter D movie.

Probably Sailor Moon (the DIC dub onTBS), followed by Tenchi Muyo on Toonami. I think I saw Akira on Sci-fi channel back in the 90's, and being very very confused by it.

I think of Slayers being the first I was actually into as I had to go out and actually look for it to watch it. I got lucky because there was a little geek shop near where I was stationed that had everything you might need for tabletop gaming, fantasy kitsch stuff, and a rental area with a whole boatload of anime series in VHS. Between that place and the anime dvd boom of 2000-2005 I worked through a lot of different series.
