Hey uh, this is my first time posting after lurking for years, and I decided to say "fuck it" and talk about my current favorite JRPG series. Haven't got my hands on 3 or X yet, but may play X soon. I'm mainly posting here because I am sick of the obnoxious and hostile fanbase, and would like to know when/how it got this bad. Sorry if my thoughts seem scrambled.

I likened the hostility to that of a zebra. Everyone got on its ass so bad that it became volatile and near impossible to approach. in this case the constant shrieking of sexism and how xenoblade 2 was too anime was the start of this

I always felt like Xenoblade 3 was the start of the really bad shit however. That game in particular attracted a ton of undesirables with characters like Juniper and A.

I’ve only played the first game (remake), but have seen a lot of 2 played through as well. I actually like the gameplay and worldbuilding a lot, but I hate the over-the-top anime elements, the weebbait character designs, the comic relief, the atheistic themes, and the whole general story. It’s weird because it does actually feel like an epic that should be taking itself more seriously than a typical Shonen Jump series. What should be at the cultural level of Zelda or Final Fantasy ends up being at the cultural level of One Piece. I’ll probably pick up X next year if I get the time.

The XBC2/3 fandom's woes are not unique. It was one of many properties that blew up in the age of tumblr/reddit/ discord and when the woke schooling was in full force, aka when forums died and retards took over. Countless other franchises fell victim to this such as RWBY, Persona, Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy XIV, Trails, Pokémon, etc.

I thought that the setting of XBC1 and 2 was very imaginative. It's the world of floating islands from Granblue, but the islands being living creatures that can talk to, can move, can fall sick, have innards you can trawl through, etc, has much more potential with it. Shame it was discarded in the third game for a typical flat landmass. I also thought it was a waste that the mechs were never pilotable. I quite liked how they were huge, very high level mobs placed in the middle of zones that you would have to navigate around like the Fel Reaver in WoW, and you could come back later and fight them.

Are the games any good? I never picked them up because of the consoles they were on.

First half of the first game is very good. The story is tense and engaging up until you reach Prison Island, after which it descends into typical "kill god with the power of friendship" JRPG bullshit but at that point you mind as well tough it out and finish it. The combat and sidequests are mediocre. Soundtrack is okay, some memorable tracks but few compared in proportion to the sheer size of the OST. The English voice acting and the cutscene direction of the first game really carried it. The sequels are not as good for various reasons, one of them being that the English dub is nowhere near as good.

Holy shit can we talk about XC2's dub? What the fuck happened between 1 and 2 that lowered the dub quality that drastically?

They are good JRPGs and you can pick any of them up because they are self-contained stories. The first one is considered the simplest. The other games add more ‘menu hell’. I feel like they’ve become the definitive JRPG since Square Enix shit the bed (some will argue SMT holds that title; to each his own).

Combat is real-time, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s an action RPG. It’s really not. It’s heavily tactical. You will need to learn to use the right actions and how to use each character well. You control one character and the rest are controlled by AI, like Star Ocean. The AI is competent and I was never annoyed by them.

The worlds are expansive and semi-open. NPCs have different schedules and relationships between other NPCs. How you accomplish side quests affect what happens to NPCs and can open or close other side quests. It’s a cool part of the game.

I think they had issues of time and resources; Monolith helped a lot with BoTW because of the ability they showed in making X, it's one of the reasons they had so many guest artists for the non-main Blades.

The voice actress for Pyra pointed out that the voice director himself had to jump in and do some stuff he shouldn't have- it's why the Mor Ardain soldiers became a meme pre-patch.

It's much less noticable by the time you get to Torna.

XB1 was really good, fun combat, large scale without the world feeling empty, nice combination of edge and optimism.

XB2 combat based on gacha single handedly ruined the game. It was also pure shonen game which didn't win it any fan. Its DLC was fantastic though, showed how much potential was lost by not focusing on individual blades.

I really liked X, it felt like a late night anime with more edge but not too much grimdark. It is also one of my favourite open worlds that doesn't have a level cap on the biomes and you need to navigate to where you survive. The mech suits were also great, but I hate the fuel system.

I didn't like 3. It tried to tie the past two entires and it just didn't work. It felt too much edgy and no point. The UI and too many party members was also pretty bad, and battles were more slogs than fun. The DLC is much better again.

Newt is best blade. End of subject.
If you were to ask my favorite blade, I'd probably say Pneuma. Having a 1 minute nuke that gives Rex invincibility AND can instantly finish blade combos will always be a fantastic utility. If we're talking about DLC only blades, I'd say Fiora. Engaging her on Rex and spamming screw edge lets you cheese so much of challenge mode if you give a shit about that. I'd also say Corvin's also really nifty on either Morag or Zeke, but probably better on Zeke because of his smash art.

I really liked the first Xenoblade, but I bounced pretty hard off the second. aside from having a different and, IMO, ultimately more generic direction from the first game, the whole initial setup with big tiddy magic girl and her pet shota protag really creeped me out. I'm sure it's fine though. highly recommend the Definitive Edition of the first game, especially on an emulator. I wouldn't call it one of the best JRPGs ever made, but it's certainly one of those extremely solid 7/10 pieces that keeps you entertained the whole way through.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but thought I'd throw my two cents in.

XC1 - My favorite game of the franchise. Love Shulk, love Reyn Time, loved the atmosphere and music and the story overall. My only gripe is the combat mechanics which I enjoyed during my first playthrough but now I've played the others I can see why people prefer those mechanics.

XC2 - At first I hated it. I didn't enjoy the English dub at all and chose to play through it with the Japanese dub instead. Loved the world it had and the music, and also loved the updated combat mechanics too. I didn't like Rex when I played through it after playing tens of hours of Shulk and then going to a Rex-like character, but looking back (and after a certain future DLC) I think I'd enjoy a second playthrough.

XC3 - Controversial take but I didn't enjoy this one at all. I didn't care for the story, I didn't connect with the characters and the ouroboros combat mechanic was a drag to constantly rely on. Graphically I enjoyed it. The world and the OST are great, but I never particularly enjoyed the characters or the story enough to think it was good. I also absolutely hated that menu music jingle that would play every time you entered it.

I've not played much of X yet so I wouldn't want to comment on it though I'm hoping it's worth the time.

I've actually been contemplating doing a second playthrough of XC2 but currently the graphics on the Switch 2 for these games is awful (at least in handheld mode). Hopefully they patch it soon.
