SSI is totally different, though. The gov't will do everything to make sure you get your money to stay sustainable. It's why creditors avoid us like the plague now, whereas Chris got his cards ~10 years ago when they were given out like candy.
EVERYONE got handed out credit cards ten years ago. Ok, more like 15 years ago. Right before the big housing crash.

I was a student, had a credit card with a 5000$ limit. Called them to see if they could raise it. “Sure, no problem. I’ve raised the limit to 20.000$!”

I repeat: I WAS A FUCKING STUDENT!

Those were golden days for white trash “wheelers and dealers” and niggo’s who wanted muh chainz and muh wheels and muh house, that there was no way in hell they could ever pay off.

And btw: Seperate post because it’s kind of a seperate subject (Don’t mod me mod!)

Some may ask: How the F does Phil pay for this shit if he has no credit card? Does him spending mean that he HAS a credit card? Not necessarily.

Phil could either just buy massive amounts of iTunes gift cards or more likely: He’s in touch with their “whale department”.

You see, every gacha game, dating all the way back to the original FarmVille or whatever the fuck it was called, basically makes something like 60-80% of their income off a few whales, who are just a few percent of the player base.

They have special “whale departments” to cater to these gacha enthusiasts/idiots.

Basically people calling them with special offers, special discounts, exclusive events etc. Phil likely has one of these whale-wranglers attached to them. No credit card? No problem! They’ll also, as a special service just for you! Usually take other methods of payments: Everything from Money orders to Western Union to all sorts of shady online money transfer services you may know of. (But probably don’t.)

Skopely aren’t fucking stupid. They’re perfectly well aware of the fact that some of their whales are either addicts or idiots or both, who had to declare bankruptcy and therefore has no access to a credit card. So are you going to leave money on the table? Of course not!

“Yes sir, a Western Union money transfer will be fine if you want to take advantage of our special $599 deal! Let me give you the details!”

You also have to remember we first discovered this account after he'd maxed out his cards and had stopped using them in anticipation of bankruptcy, i.e. he was only spending cash on this money sink. From that perspective we just have no idea how terrible his spending was when banks were still dumb enough to extend credit to him.

Given his approach of making minimum payments only on his cards I imagine his spending was much higher back in 2017-2018, reached a low in mid-2019 when he was probably spending $1,000-plus a month to barely reduce the principal, then ticked back up to the levels we are seeing now when he started meeting with Rochelle around October 2019.

I also agree that we can't prove he's using credit cards because he's shown a bit of self restraint this year - there have been a few events where he placed abnormally high/low relative to what one would expect based on his recent tips but it looks like he was just not playing much in some events so that he could really whale on others.

did people forget that debit/bank cards are a thing? while i'm sure phil has his own scopely tard wrangler, i've never seen anyone hear mention the possibility that phil could be whaling on a debit card. it's more in line with how his whaling is consistent with what he makes every day

With iPhones you can directly pay with PayPal too!

It's been bandied about that Phil has a Paypal Cash Card which is a debit card that directly uses his Paypal contributions, and would explain the small fees he repeatedly has for taking his money out and emptying his account.

Phil would need money in a bank account for a bank debit card to fund his gacha illness, which we know he barely has any.

i was under the impression he was incurring fees for using the instant transfer to bank account feature

I wish we knew just what about the game triggers his whale instincts. Is it getting the new characters? Placing on the leaderboard? Flexing on guild members in Line Chat? There's probably some sort of logic behind what he does, but we're stuck on the outside looking in.

A good time to post this, I'll just embed the videos except the last.
They give a bit of insight on DSP's mindset when it comes to mobile games, it also tells me that one of the reasons why he doesn't see anything problematic with it may be because he feels that he's in control, it's in one of the next videos.
He's self conscious about how the game hooked him, which means that he has the power over it.

Amongst those games are the ones references in the next video.

No, I do not play games off stream by myself unless it's a mobile game, I do play some mobile games offline, that's about it though.

This is seriously exactly what it's like to play a mobile game. Pull, pull, pull, I want this one item, pull, pull, pull where's the item, where's the item, where's the item, where's the item, where's the item, where's the item, spend 4000 dollars trying to fucking do it and never get what you want.
This is exactly what it's like with a mobile game, I swear to god. When I used to play WWE supercard, or what was the other- oh, like Dokkan bat- this is exact- pull, pull, pull, can't get what you want, pull, pull, pull... nothing. You're like fuck this game, you sta- I don't have money to play this shit, I quit. And that's exactly what I did, I said fuck these games. (He then gets the bus on Shenmue if you want to see that)

He talks about the scam of lootboxes and "mobile games formula", how they're free to download but in order to do good you must spend, and acknowledges that it's some form of gambling.
He then gives the example of Overwatch and spending on skins, but because it's optional it's not that bad.

I also had this video saved, it's from sometime on 2014 so it's old, can't be bothered to find the source right now, but he talks about how they end up consuming your time without you even realizing it, and how it happened to him. For this it's obviously not Champions, but he has the "personality type" (term he uses for people prone to getting hooked).

I swear Phil is like the perfect cacophony of bad financial choices.
Reckless spending, Credit card debt, Gambling addiction...
If he never became a LPer he'd be homeless by now couch surfing endlessly.
He honestly shouldn't even be allowed access to his own finances. He isn't capable of handling it.
