God, when I think of what Phil could've done with all that money instead of give it to the most soulless video game developer I've ever seen...

That might be a good idea for a thread: Stuff That DSP Should've Spent That Champions Money On.

So, I started playing a mobile game because I now have a phone that can run them. Because I have been curious on how shit this game really is. And holy fuck it is so shit.

I used to play that Sega one a while back too, and I always thought it was scummy how you unlocked characters in pieces. But you could grind and some characters you could just buy. But a 1% chance for pieces in this game? Fuck it Phil has the Gacha he deserves

For real, I've never played any mobage gacha game, so I just did not know the extent of how scummy Scopely's sweaty wrestlemen game just really is. I mean, the steep prices and the ungodly amount of grind if you don't spend any money people have talked about in the thread already makes the game seem extremely exploitative when looked at in a vacuum. But then as the thread went on people started talking about other gacha games, many of which are probably more well known and more successful than WWE Champions I assume, and HOLY SHIT! When looked at from every aspect you can judge a gacha game from, WWE Champions is not only slightly more scummier, it's like a higher magnitude of scummy and all of them combined form into the scummiest business model for a gacha game I have ever seen. Is there really no other gacha game with jpegs of sweaty musclemen on the market with a business model more in line with what seems to be the industry standard?
But, to add to your last point.
"All whales get the gacha game they deserve"
~Joseph de Maistre, probably

So this guy spent $300 and didn't even unlock the wrestlers he was after.

Meanwhile Phil has 95% of all the available wrestlers. Maybe he does have pigroach luck and got most of them on the first pull. More likely however is he has dumped an astronomical amount of money into this game.

I actually downloaded the game just to see what it was about, and why I quickly noticed is that the “skill” element in the game (smashing the gems, the candy crush part) seems... Well... Faked.

If the game “wants” you to win, all sorts of “lucky” combinations of gems pop up out of nowhere.

Conversely, when the game “wants” you to lose, there’s nothing you can do and all those possible 4 and 5 gem combos are impossible to find/get.

(Mostly speculating here, but the purpose of losing a match would be to make you spend some cash and level up a fighter. Winning the following match would then give the player sense of accomplishment and a little endorphin boost.)

I’d love to see the source code, but the “skill” part def. seems rigged.

Welcome to a predatory (relatively) unregulated sphere of gambling. As long as the concept of value exists, insidious ways to take that value from others will, too.

The weird part is that it’s a pretty shitty game. I don’t understand why people play it, and this is coming from someone who’ve put their fair share of hundreds of dollars into mobile games.

Like, if you like the candy crush element, there are lots of games that do that better. Games that don’t rip you off, mind you.

If you like the collecting element or wrestling, again, there are other games that do that better. Like, card collecting games such as WWE Smash or whatever it’s called.

But this game? It’s just a subpar mashup that does one thing extremely well: Fishing hundreds and thousands of dollars out of the pockets of suckers.

There's something tricky about that pricing. Feels like they're trying to make the "Baller" pack read like it's $34.99. The tokens in the illustration increase linearly but the prices step up by an order of magnitude!

It’s not so much that as it is an old marketing trick. You put an obscenely high price up there, to make the 25$ package seem cheaper.

If it just had the medium price option up there, many players would go: “Woah! 25$ is kind of a lot!”. But by putting it next to 135$ it seems cheaper and folks select the more moderately priced package they might not otherwise consider.

Funny that you mentioned that because Phil himself has complained about the exact same thing!
Timestamp at 37:10 in case it doesn't work

Tetris also cheats because all I need is that long piece and they keep giving me those fucking L shaped pieces!

REEEEEEE!

Wow... I didn’t know about that clip.

I find it kinda fascinating that Phil is smart enough to notice this... But not smart enough to draw the conclusions from it and leave it the fuck alone.

Or maybe it’s a little glimpse into the inner life of a pigroach.

Phil knows the game is fucking with him, but he still persists because it gives him the chance to be the big guy... The cock of the block with all the good cards and part of the top 5% of players. (Or whatever)

Btw: If Phil had any brains, he’d sell the account. Could easily go for hundreds or maybe even a few thousand dollars.

(though I don’t exactly know the market or economics here, and am only gauging the value based on other mobile card collecting games.)

Either way he’s fucked with it. Trolls won’t let him join other factions or ever let him forget about it, so might as well cut his losses.

Hey Phil! I know you read these threads! Sell your Chanpions account and download WWE Slam instead! There’s plenty of opportunities to spend money and be the big guy with all the cards that everyone looks up to!

That is perhaps the most pathetic part about it: he knew exactly what was going to happen and still did it.

I'm telling you, this game is not something that spiraled out of control for him. He recognized that he's an addict and chose to just let that addiction run the whole show because fighting it was too much work. He started playing Champions specifically for it to scratch that itch and gave zero fucks about the cost. Still does, guaranteed.

Just a small correction, he's trying to get ‘shards’ for two specific wrestlers in those loot boxes so he can get them in the first place. You can see in the beginning of the video he needs 20 to ‘recruit’ Ted DiBiase and 115 for Nikki Bella. He spends $135 over the course of the video for a 2.65% chance at getting any of the shards he needs. The 115 for Nikki is a particularly tall order, since most of the time he's getting only 20 shards per wrestler. He ends up with 0, for either. The shards he does get for the weaker wrestlers can't even be used to power them up, because shards are just one of many currencies in this game, he would have to make an assortment of purchases to get everything he needs.

Oh, that's fucking brutal. $300 down the drain for literally nothing in return.

He can’t sell it, Scopely accounts are tied to the device they were created on and the TOS stipulates that the account will be deleted if it is sold.

Trading accounts is against Scopelys terms though and they would shut the account down as soon as they see its logged into from another phone a couple times. he could maybe get a couple hundred from someone who thinks having a whaled account for a day is worth it.

Only way he even has a chance at going unnoticed is if he asked Scopely to delete a good chunk of his items along with another name change and he could deal with a couple months or so of bragging withdrawl without blowing his cover.

ORLY?

Selling accounts is usually against the TOS, but it’s obly rarely enforced and there’s usually a sizable grey market in most games regardless.

Selling your account is illegal the same way giving money to Tevin is illegal.

The big pig doesn't get any money so it's wrong.

I have to question this. You can't tell me he'd lose the account after getting a new phone due to the old one falling in the toilet with the bacon grease.

I agree.

You are not allowed to have the same account on a different phone? You aren't allowed to change your name either. With a $40,000+ account, there is always an exception.
